Default Can employer read Text Messages?

Please Login to Remove!

I have a Blackberry that doubles as my personal cell phone. I pay the bill, and I bought the Blackberry, but my employer has set it up so I can send/receive work email. Can they view or read my personal text messages? Or monitor my personal calling activity?

That's not possible the only one how can read your messages is (for example T-Mobile).

But this is not as easy even for T-Mobile the have to pull the messages for a server.

I have worked for T-mobile (in The Netherlands) and did there process management.

If you are setup on a corporate BES system with your employer, yes, they can log your SMS. Absolutely.

To repeat: On a BES they can log your SMS.
Whether they do it is another question.

I've heard conflicting stories on this. The company policy is that the BlackBerry is personal. They don't issue it, pay for it, etc. They do set it up for your work email, but the cell phone and text messaging is supposed to be personal. How can they log SMS if this is supposed to be the policy?

Depends on your company. At my company nothing connected to the network is personal.

If you are concerned you should speak to your IT Security Department.

By "log" do you mean they can see that an SMS message has been sent and to whom? Or do you mean they can view the actual contents?

They can also log your phone calls and the PIN messages.

they can view the actual content of SMS and PIN messages. For phones calls they get the time stamp, phone number and duration.

Check under Options->Advanced Options->Service Books. Do you have any entries starting with Desktop?

Not if you are on a BES (which you are) and your employer is monitoring SMS and voice.

So then it's just an issue of whether the IT department actually monitors this type of thing? They can do this, but they don't necessarily do it? Is that accurate?

Yes. That's what I said in the 4th post in this thread. They can. IF they do it is another question.
