Blackberry and Optus (Aust)
I am a little confused and dismayed about the Optus service in Aust.
From what I read in the forums, you can use a Blackberry on a generic data plan (without using RIM branded applications etc) but Optus for some reason do not, or can not supply a GPRS service on a Blackberry without a Blackberry data plan?.
I use two phones, sure one is an old Seimens S55 with a data plan that allows me to access my email (through Optus) and the internet. On occassions, I want to use a Blackberry with Golfing and Worldmate applications, but I cannot use my generic plan??.
It seems other carriers allow you to use the BB on generic plans but Optus want you to take out another BB plan. Am I missing something here or is it just Optus screwing us again for more revenue??
Does Telstra, Vodaphone, and others in Aust allow BB to use existing generic data plans or is it just Optus who do not allow this function??
Any further advice or suggestions welcomed.

Thanks for the reply.
I setup the APN to: internet, Username: - {blank}
Password: - {blank} as advised, but still no access with Optus.
You mentioned TCP settings??. Where do you get to that setup?.

Sorry about late reply.
Yes I have setup the APN as described in various forums for Optus, but apparently you cannot connect with Optus using a generic plan. They say you have to have a BB plan.???
I don't need to get forwarded email, I need to access the web for programs like Worldmate, Gmail, Nav4all to mention a few.
If anybody knows how to do it with Optus, or any other Aust carrier, would love to hear from them.

In case it's not too late for you - I just moved from the US to Australia. I have Optus. I do have a BB plan for my BES functions. But I also added an Optus Internet plan. Apparently, Optus needs to charge me for phone, Blackberry services, and still has another service I have to subscribe to for Internet functions (like using my phone as a modem and using the *99# number to connect). So, I believe you do need to add the Internet service, but not necessarily a Blackberry plan...

You may or may not find this useful but I use a Treo 650 on Virgin Mobile in Australia with a generic data plan. It is available to post paid/monthly customers. If you bring your own phone/BB you are not tied to a contract like me. It only costs $5/50MB per month. Give it a try.
