John, not sure you got a chance to answer my question.

John, thanks a bunch for this. Great help.
Question though.

I have the 8130 with Telus in Canada.
After doing what you mentioned, and even deleting VAD, I only have 16 MB free. I have looked, I have a few apps installed that are large, Opera Mini, Facebook, Jive Talk, Google Maps.

I don't have a lot of contacts or messages. When I load the phone with DM, says its loading about 33MB of stuff when updating, plus give or take a few MBs of my apps and databases (which are 700KB, btw.) Should it be that high with 33mb?

Any idea what else is there that is taking up so much?
Also, Im running the .97 OS.

Sprint doesn't allow MMS on their BlackBerrys but they do have it on pretty much every other phone. If I install an OS from a carrier other than Sprint will I have the ability to send MMS?

No. It's carrier dependent. Not OS dependent.

That's about right. I don't know what else you have saved on your device. How big is your content store database?

Well I did it and now have 28536050 Bytes free space.
All seems to be working I kept voice activation but removed PPT.
The only problem is BB Maps is missing in the applications on the DM. I looked at the code and it is the same as the instructions
What should I do to try and retrieve it from the code.

On 4.2 and lower devices the lbs.alx needs to be edited as posted above. That should be all that's necessary.

I finally took the plunge last night. I gained some memory but until I delete a bunch of gps/map apps, I guess my memory will be impaired. I will put back the cod that allows folders to be colored - I liked having a green (forest cover) for gps/mapping apps, purple for games and yellow for Utilities.

edit: I added back the module that allows colored folders. DM immediately recognized it was added back before I even went to the application update. I was surprised that after DM did its thing that the BB rebooted (hour glass, verizon security check, etc) but my folders were still all the same color. I then used the Soft-reset program to reboot again - colored folders were back. So, I gather, doing a "major" remodel of the modules does not cause a full reset???

My content store database is 25/579.5K.
Total database sizes for all is 1.3MB.

So if we add 33MB (that includes all my 3rd party apps) and 1.3MB, we are at 34ish.

50 - 34 = 16.

I even got rid of latin suretype cod, which was 700K.

I just don't get it. People say they have 20 something available, yet we all have 64MB space. Im deleting everything possible!

Only 55Mb of space is reported in the OS's even though there is 64Mb. Older OS's report the full 64 but the newer ones report 55.

If you delete all language cod except for English this will not cause a problem
When you use DM applications and uninstall that way I guess it still keeps the cod in the system has KB?

If you use DM applications it doesn't load those other .cods to the device. You don't have to remove them from the java folder. If you just check English in DM you will only get English .cod's.

55? I says I only have 50 with the .97 firmware.

Any other ideas of what could be taking up my memory? I'm not crazy right, something doesn't seem to be correct here?

If it reports 50 and tells you 33 is being installed then 16Mb or so, is correct. I don't know what they do with the other 10-15Mb they don't report.

Will update when possible.

It's not that complicated. It's a little long but the read is longer than actually accomplishing it. I explained everything in detail. You should be fine. Just print it and follow the instructions and you'll be good to go. Once you see how it works you'll see how easy it is.

John,

Excellent tutorial, even for someone new to BB. Any thoughts on how to get rid of the "Sprint Software Store" icon on my 8830 screen? Couldn't find anything in the JAVA folder that looked like it fit.

Thanks,

Tony Bonanno

I'm not John, and this wont remove it from your device, but you can always hit the menu key when on that icon in the menu, and select "Hide." It's still there, but it wont be in the way.

Those are service books. You can delete them from your list of service books but they will likely just come back. Just hide them as suggested above.

Hello all,

I just bought a BB curve (8310) yesterday through Rogers. I live in Manitoba Canada and I found this forum by just browsing, I must say wow awesome forum and lots of great info.

Now on with my problem.... I've followed step by step instructions for adding themes and it worked great however where I'm having issues is the part of deleting cods that I wont required (IE: VAD, preloaded themes) I removed the cods I didn't want and placed them in a folder as a backup on my desktop. I then ran DM and the only thing that pops up with BB connected is do you want to erase all applications check box and on the following page the device backup page. I leave it blank for now because I don't want to wipe the BB and click on finish and it says theres no updates necessary.

Was I supposed to add the "backup" folder and then "delete" the backup folder in DM? thats the part where I get lost.

"6. Connect BB and run DM. Open Application Loader and finish to add/remove the .cod's added/removed from java folder.
Once you've removed anything you know you don't want we can now connect the device to the computer and run application Loader.
If you installed a newer OS than what was on the device then Desktop Manager should prompt you to upgrade once you plug in the device and start Desktop Manager. If not, run Application Loader and you should see a list of applications. Where are they my apps loader screen is blank except for the theme I added

thanks for any clarity you may provide, this is my first BB so I'm pretty green when it comes to "customizing"

PS: I did a search and this was the only page that related to my topic so thats why I posted here.

Cheers

So, I don't believe this has been mentioned here, or anywhere that I have seen.

If you go into options under media, there is a option there for 2MB of reserved picture space. If you change that to 0MB (if you have a media card inserted) you just made 2MB free automatically on the device.

Anyone else aware of this, or am I just behind?

NoDuff:

1. Make sure you installed the same OS version to your PC as is on your BB.

2. Make sure the vendor.xml file is deleted. Even if you deleted it once, check again.

Openlate:
Yes, that should be set to 0 if you have a media card. I didn't cover that here as it's covered other places. I may add that in, as well.

For sure add it in, it helps. I have never seen that before or on any other forums and just discovered it now. Also, the Device Memory Limit under Options for Media should be set the the lowest it can go, correct?

I am still not able to get BB maps to load. I deleted the OS system from my computer and re installed the OS system. This is what my code looks like prior to edit.

<!-- For 8800 series, hide the icon for AT&T (102), Vodafone Germany (124), Vodafone Austria (137) and all Orange properties, including Amena (Orange Spain - 175). -->
<!-- For non-8800 series, show the icon for all carriers except AT&T (102), Vodafone Germany (124), Vodafone Austria (137) and all Orange properties, including Amena (Orange Spain - 175). -->

<fileset SystemSize="normal" Java="1.0">

</fileset>

It does not have the Vendor ID in the first part of the code it is in the show the icon for all carriers part. is there something wrong here.

Do I just remove the 102|124|137|119|162|142|183|147|217|175" series="~8800

Another question.
If you just want to remove from the Java folder the .cods
Do you still have to edit the BB.alx code?
Is it connected so if the Vendor ID is not removed from the BB.alx, that they will not be removed from the Java folder for the .cod?

Do you gain more memory by doing all the steps?

Reason I ask is if you do not want to add any themes at all and just remove them except the one you use that edit of the BB.alx is necessary

Thanks for all the help

Edited..One other thing Telenav is not installed but the icon is still there should that be gone also?

Raven, if you do NOT edit the Blackberry.alx file, the OS will only load those themes and applications which are assigned by the vendor code on your BB, in this case AT&T.

The TN icon you see is only a browser shortcut to the download. It is not very big, so just hide it.

I'm sorry John, but given that this is my first time ever using a PC (Mac user) I'm still a little confused:

I see how to delete all the wallpapers at once by moving the file "net_rim_bb_media_240x260_b." However, I don't get how to put only specific pre-loaded wallpapers on the phone. I only want stratosphere, footprints, seafoam, and purify. How do I do this?

Also, is there a way to only have a few preloaded ringtones/notifiers on my phone? I only want Alarm_Antelope, Alarm_highalert, Notifier_Etvoila, Notifier_greeter, and Notifier_sonar. Also, the preloaded sample music file needs to go too.

Can someone help me, with as many specifics as possible? I'm using a friend's dell with Vista on it. I have a 8100 with AT&T.

Thanks,
Pete

Pete,
Unfortunatly, it's an "all or nothing" sort of thing. You either load them or you don't. You can't have just a few out of there.

Shoot. And that goes for the pictures as well as the ringtones?

Is there any way to unlock them on my phone then? I'd like to free up more space, because I just now got another notification that I need to delete text messages, but I only had two days worth on there. It's surprising to me though, because I have almost 40 MB of free memory now.

Maybe the texts are getting saved to the wrong place. Can I switch them from saving on the sim card or the device memory?

Thanks,
Pete

Yes, that goes for pics as well as ringtones. However, you could take screenshots of the wallpapers, save them and then load them back manually. You can use JL_Cmder in my sig to take the screenshots.

Go to Options >SMS Text and change "Leave Messages On Sim Card" to "No."

Default Won't let me save - 04-07-2008, 10:13 AM

I tried to delete the vendor files as directed; however, it won't let me save them. I get the following msg: Cannot create the C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research in Motion\Shared\LoaderFiles\8130-v4.3.097_P3.1.0.51\Blackberry.alx.file. Make sure the path and file names are correct. I opened the blackberry alx file with notepad. Any ideas?
