You need the OS for your device installed IN ADDITION TO the Desktop Manager.
Honestly, if you're using an 8900 as your profile suggests I wouldn't even bother with this thread. I don't do it to my 8900. The 8900 has plenty of application memory.

You got that right. All new Berrys shoujld have similar on board memory. This problem should be no more on the new ones. Thank you RIM.

removing t-mobile theme -
05-05-2009, 04:05 PM
Hello, I have t-mobile bold 9000 with 2 themes:
Precision Silver and,
Precision Zen (t-mobile theme)
I would like to delete the t-mobile theme. How do i do it? I have the following themes in my java folder:
net_rim_theme_102_zen_480x320_b.cod
net_rim_theme_114_480x320_b.cod
net_rim_theme_115_480x320_b.cod
net_rim_theme_119_zen_480x320_b.cod
net_rim_theme_122_zen_480x320_b.cod
net_rim_theme_precision_silver_480x320_b.cod
net_rim_theme_precision_zen_480x320_b.cod
Which one should i delete and paste to Removed Modules folder? Also, do i need to add/edit the blackberry.alx file and what changes should i make to it?
Thank you.

Camera problem -
05-22-2009, 07:15 PM
I've had the same problem. Tried these fixes - some of which worked for some - with different result:
1 this AWESOME guide - didn't work
2 Pull the battery while ON - didn't work
3 Put LIGHT presuure on the camera with battery off - didn't work
4 change picture storage to SD card - didn't work
5 options-advanced...-host-register - didn't work
6 pulled SD card - worked for a minute or so (I tought card was faulty. Worth a try)
7 installed original version of device manager that came with the phone (my case 4.2.0.14) and reinstalled latest device software with it ( at time 4.5.0.55) finally worked!!!
Seems the the newer version of DM messed something up for me. But the latest version of device software is ok as long as I used the original (for me) version of Dm to install it. It took me a month but finally.

This was an Outstanding step by step DIY!!!
Thank you for all the info!
I do have one quick question tho. I have the ATT Bold and i did all items steps 1 - 6 and installed OS 4.6.0.266.
When working with the Loader it did say it would install Blackberry maps but when i look for them, i am not finding the icon for it anywhere. Is it hidden and if so how do i find it and unhide the icon?
Thank you again John Clark for all the help!

ATT doesn't get BlackBerry Maps. They don't send the, now required, service books for it.

I agree - you could try removing spell checker or the voice recorder, but there are, in my view, dodgy outcomes when removing files, I don't think it's worth the risk personally. Use some blackberry logic. Balancing high-concept experimentation with urban practicality is the only way to proceed. Good luck!

Sound Profiles Not working after file cleanup -
06-10-2009, 04:55 PM
I upgraded to 4.5.0.152 and then did the above to remove PTT, docs to go, password keeper and the dimension today theme. Now I can't change the sounds in my sound profile. Nothing happens when I click on loud after advanced. Any ideas what I deleted that caused this?
Thanks!

8830 BES Server - Unlocking vendor themes -
06-16-2009, 04:14 PM
My 8830 is with my company and on a BES server. If I unlock vendor themes, and update the core applications with the desktop manager, will it require reactivation through my company's Server so that I can receive email again?

Omg your favorite person is back again! jk jk.
So, I've already had one opinion on this - but I figure I should ask here as well
I finally made the switch (thanks to working for Qwest) to verizon, and I just got my storm today.
I've ALREADY had those same sluggish issues I had with my 8100, even though I have oodles of file free space still. My question is, HAVE people had to go through this on the storm? Or can you even?
(I tried to search, only came up with one post pertaining to the storm )

You could, but the Storm has plenty of on board memory. I don't think it's necessary. However, upgrading your OS should help up with the sluggishness of the device.

Yeah that's something else I've been reading.. so I'm probably gonna give that a try here in a bit.
The last time I upgraded an OS I totally lost my whole phone book (even with a backup) I was sad!
Other than the difficulty of learning the touch screen though, lovin it!!

Welcome back around. You're missed in OTL. Create a backup, then do the OS Upgrade using the Loader.exe file. Follow the steps to the letter and you should be alright.

Wirelessly posted (stormy storm)
Well I'm asking more questions!
So, I'm using my phone quite a bit (too lazy to turn on computer) and although I expect some of it, is going from 33mb free to 12 free in the same 9 hour period normal?? Maybe I'm freaking out where I shouldn't be...
I know cdma will take more resources than my previous gsm, this phone does more, personal usage, they're all factors.
I just don't wanna lose my call logs and emails
Am I ok? Or is a 50% drop crazy?

BBMaps on Curve 8310 AT&T -
06-25-2009, 12:01 PM
Hi.. I'm new to the forum and this thread is the best I ever read! Thanks to the author.
I just have a BB for a couple of weeks and whit so much info I'm becoming a power user of the BB platform in shot time. I just break my head trying to make the BBMaps available to the new OS:
8310M_PBr4.5.0_rel152_PL2.7.0.90_A4.5.0.110_AT&T
Does any one has been capable of unhide the ICON to access it?
I was considerating replace the new LBS.alx for the old one that can be eddited to show the missing ICON. Those that is possible without damage my precious BB? As everybody knows, the application is in there! We just need a way to access it...
Thanks for so much knowledge!
From Puerto Rico!

not sure what to do... -
06-28-2009, 07:11 PM
I have OS 4.5.0.81 on my device, but the only desktop TMO has is 4.6.0.14 so I'm not getting a "shared" folder. What do I do, because I'm not understanding your instructions. I looked at AT&T, Vodafone and some others but I can't find matching OS' for device and PC. Am I completely not getting this? Thanks!

I uninstalled EVERY OS verison I have, kept the DM though, and then reinstalled the 138 OS to my computer. I deleted vendor, changed the vendorid in the blackberry.alx file, deleted the modules, and tried using both loader.exe and DM but when I do so it says that no further actions are required.
What, if anything, am I doing wrong?
Should I try installing all OS and DM from my computer and deleting all the folders and then doing this all over again. That is really all I can think of, it worked previously, just not with this OS for some reason.

Currently having this same issue with DM 5.0........
EDIT:
Update, even though it seems counterintuitive, if you hit NEXT, it tells you nothing is needed to be done. But then you hit FINISH and it removes the modules.

I have done many of the steps in this wonderful post successfully, but something strange happened after installing Ka-Glom, then uninstalling it (using BB App store).
Before installing Ka-Glom, my starting memory after a battery pull or double-reset was around 18,200,000 bytes. This app is supposedly 324k, according to App store. After installing, my memory dropped to around 17,300,000 (after a battery pull), which quite surprised me. I didn't want a game that took up 900k so I uninstalled. Now the starting memory (after a battery pull) is just over 17,600,000.
Where did the 600,000 bytes of memory go? I tried clearing the content store but that didn't help. I'm wondering if an application got installed that I can't see listed anywhere, and that I can't get rid of. I just want the memory back!
Note that when I now look at database sizes (from status), the total size is 408k, split mostly among various things that make sense to me (calendar, address book, phone call logs). The content store is only 65.5k so even if that were zero it would only get back a small chunk of memory.
Any ideas how Ka Glom (through BB app store) could cause memory to disappear like that - and how I can get it back?
I've noticed little tiny bits of memory disappear from other app store installs/uninstalls but I never cared before as the numbers were tiny. This time it was huge and I want the memory back. Sorry if this has been asked before but I spent quite a bit of time googling, searching this forum, and experimenting before asking this question.

Make a backup of the device. Then go to Options >Security Options >General Settings. Hit the menu key and select "Wipe Handheld". Then restore the backup to the device. You will get your memory back.

Thanks for the suggestion, though I was hoping to avoid the drastic step of wiping the handheld and restoring from a backup. The desktop software just backs up the data, not installed 3rd party apps, right? Is there a way to backup apps as well?
Do you have any guesses as to what happened? Or is it so hard to troubleshoot these things that people just routinely do wipe/restores instead of trying to diagnose?

The security wipe doesn't wipe the 3rd party apps. It will wipe the data in them, though.

I decided to do a wipe, and I did recover over 2 million bytes of memory (wow!).
However, I made two mistakes which is costing me a couple hours to rebuild my phone. I write this to help others with no experience doing wipes from making the same mistakes:
1) Turns out the blackberry desktop manager has aborted all my backups for the last 9 months - I suppose because part of my database was corrupt (just a guess). So the backup I thought I did just before the wipe was not recorded to the hard drive. Luckily, I store the data I care about in the cloud with Google, so this was not a big deal, other than the time consuming aspect of restoring various settings. Nevertheless for now on, I will always confirm that any BB backup I do was actually backed up.
2) I didn't understand that the option for 3rd party apps in the wipe command meant the apps would be wiped, not just data. Some I'm having to reinstall all my apps, which on my 8320 with EDGE is quite laborious (I'm not near WiFi at the moment). Only the BB Apps Word didn't get wiped.
It is interesting (annoying, actually) to see how time consuming it is to rebuild a BB with less than a dozen apps from scratch. Took me nearly 2.5 hours (including syncs, testing, settings changes etc.), though much of time I multitasked while waiting for various downloads to finish.

Actually, I just did a final battery pull and memory cleaning and it was over 3,600,000 bytes freed up by doing the wipe.
The backups are now backing up fine. So I guess something went wrong with my database, perhaps around the time I upgraded to 4.5 (I did the official T-mobile 4.5.0.81 version just after it came out).

Can the "ToGo" cods be deleted -

First and foremost, thanks to John for this outstanding DIY- clear and easy to follow and most of all, useful.
I do not use the DocToGo, SheetsToGo, etc. (at least that I know of) as we use the Enterprise version of ReplioGo.
Can these be deleted?
I have followed all the deletions and only kept my Verizon and the required themes, etc. but am still only able to get a max of 10.5 MB free, which then reduces to about 7.5 MB with use of the browser, etc.
I do have the following programs loaded besides the standard stuff:
RepliGo
WorldMateLive
Google App
Google Maps
BerryACode
TeleNav
CryptMagic
Chronograph
the biggest is WorldMate Live at 1.5 MB and the next; the rest are not that big (next biggest is TeleNav at 635 KB).
Thanks

You can delete Docs To Go easily by simply unchecking the box in Application Loader.
