What's the default memory on my VZW 8830? I'm assuming 64MB? Here's what I'm showing for status:
File Free: 2992310 Bytes
File Total: 47841280 Bytes
Does that mean I only have 2.9MB free with 47.8MB in use? What happened to the other 14MB I'm supposed to have?

Just did battery pull. Free now showing 11275897, so 11MB free, but still thought the 8830 had 64mb default, not 48.???

att ptt -
01-30-2008, 10:47 PM
hi
thanks for the guide and information! I have had my att 8310 for only a few days, tried to follow the steps to remove ptt from my device by deleting the two files from the java menu but nothing happened. Additionally I accidentally turned ptt on and now it is always running on my phone. Can anyone help me?
thanks

Thanks this has been great; but I need a little more help. It seems everytime I get a new phone its loaded down with shopping applications such as games, graphics, tunes, etc. Have you been able to identify which .cod's these are? They drive me nuts everytime . I just end up hiding them, but if I can remove it, well then I want it gone!!!

Those are service books. You can delete them. They may come back by themselves, though. If so, just hide them.

Ok, get ready for a dumb question: how doI install the BB OS on my computer? My BB only came with the DM software.

To Add All Themes:(we will remove the ones we don't want later.)
Navigate the the following location in windows explorer:
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\Shared\Loader Files
I'm getting stuck at this step. In don't have a Shared folder in my Research in Motion folder -- ??? All I have in my RIM folder is AppLoader, BBBI Drivers, Modem Drivers, RIMDeviceManager, and USB Drivers. It's a VZW 8830.
Money isn't everything -- it's the only thing.

I have this exact same problem. I have an 8130 that I got from Verizon 3 days ago. Initially, I went straight to RIM and downloaded the latest software. I got and installed a file called "Desktop Software v4.3 (English).exe". It was 215MB.
With that installed, I had no Loader Files folder. I searched my whole hard drive for blackberry.alx and *.cod and found none.
I followed the additional instructions in this thread, and followed the links which eventually took me to VZW's website and I downloaded the latest software from there. There were only 3 choices: Desktop Software v4.3 (updated 11/20/07), Desktop Software v4.3 (updated 11/13/07), and the VZAccess Manager software.
I downloaded the Desktop Software v4.3 (updated 11/20/07). That gave me a file named "Desktop Software v4.3 (Multilanguage).exe". It is 340MB. I installed it over the top of what I already had. Still no "Loader Files" folder or any .COD files.
What am I doing wrong?

that's the regular desktop software.
You need to download the OS for your BB.
It's like downloading Microsoft Visual Studio then wondering where a certain project is. You have to download the individual project...or in this case the OS.

I should be more clear. I did go to the link at the beginning of the sticky on downloading the latest OS, but it took me to a page on BlackBerry.com that said it was for downloading for US Cellular customers. I'm with Verizon.

Okay, sorry for sounding like an idiot. I have re-read the stuff about using that download with any vendor, and I will try it.
I'm also trying to get it paired via Bluetooth, so I can sync and use-as-modem via BT. Between the two things, I'm getting myself confused.
Sorry.

The instructions in the first post are very clear. There are TWO (2) different pieces of software that MUST be downloaded AND installed to your PC. You MUST have the proper OS for your device installed on the PC in ADDITION to Desktop Manager. Desktop Manager is just the tool used to load the OS. It does NOT contain the OS's.
For those having difficulty downloading Verizon OS's. Go to the Verizon software site (you can find it in the link in Step 2 in the first post) and click on "Personal Email." Then select your device. Then you will see "Desktop Manager" "Device Software" and "VZ Access Manager." Please click on "Device Software" and enter your phone number and then click on the "Download Now" button at the bottom.

Okay, now I REALLY feel like an idiot. I've looked at that Verizon page about 5 times, and I JUST realized that it's not two links to Verizon Desktop Software (with 2 different dates). One says Verizon Desktop, and the other says Verizon Device. DUUHH!
Again, my apologies to those of you who have been so generous with your time on the original posts, and even bigger apologies for wasting more of it on stuff you already told me!

Very new to BB game -
02-06-2008, 12:29 PM
I don't actually have my BB yet. I have purchased a unlocked TMo 8320 for use on AT&T. I was reading this optimization thread in prep for when mine arrives. Obviously AT&T doesn't have the newest BB OS for the 8320 on their site. So I have a few ?'s. The OS looks very independent from the actual phone vendor, i.e. TMo. So I can just download their newest copy of the OS from TMo and customize it for my own uses, right? Will this effect the fact that it is unlocked (bear w/ me I am a n00b on this). Also could I enter the vendor=102 and set it to the AT&T settings? Actually I probably won't but a just "What if?" senerio. I would prefer to make this as customized as possible and if it didn't have any vendor logos or any thing other than my stuff that would be great. I just want to make sure this won't re-lock my phone. I don't think it can from what I have been researching but and ounce of prevention as they say. I am a UNIX/Linux admin, so I have been burnt by many updates/upgrades that were suppose to be easy and painless. Like I said I am a total n00b on these though. Thanks for any and all help guys! BTW this is a great forum.

welcome to the forums!
1. It is impossible to re-lock the device once unlocked.
2. You can't re-code the device from TMo (100) to AT&T (102.) However, when you remove the vendor coding from the .alx files as I describe above you can load what you want to the device regardless of vendor coding.
3. I doesn't matter what carrier's OS you put on the device. Just check the stickies in the 8300 forum for the latest 8320 OS (right now it's 4.2.2.184) and follow the instructions there to install.
4. It's impossible to remove the boot splash screen on a BB.

you can download any 8320 OS and place it on the device. check the 8300 forum at the top, the stickies have the latest OS listed for the 8320. Follow the instructions in the post and you will be fine. Being unlocked doesnt really change much on the device other than letting you use it with any GSM carrier. The carrier specific stuff will be pushed to the handheld. Vendor logos during boot and on the device itself will remain.

It would be different for each device and for each OS.
Update: I only use TMo Zen theme so I was able to delete BB dimension icon, and dimension today themes safely and freed up another 600KB or so. However, be aware that if you do this and then later download a 3rd party theme it may not function without the dimension themes installed.

John,
I have a question for you. I basically only use the Dimension L theme. I was thinking of deleting the Dimension Zen and Dimension Icon themes and just keeping the Dimension L and the Dimension Today theme (on Verizon 8130). Would this be ok, knowing that I don't plan on adding any other themes? The Dimension Zen theme is 1.846 meg and the Dimension Icon theme is 469k, while the Dimension L is only 58k and Dimension Today is 185k. Neither L and Today relies on stuff in the Zen or Icon themes, correct?

The Dimension L is pretty small. I'm sure it uses the Dimension zen. Don't remove Dimension Zen. You can probably delete dimension icon, and dimension today, though.

Rats.....thanks though. I did follow the rest of your advice and was able to reclaim about an additional MB of data (I removed Brickbreaker and the DOD). Weird thing is though, it also removed my browser icon (although the browser app was still there). Went to BIS and resent service books and all was well after that. I also did get rid of Yahoo Go 3.0 (that was a pig at almost 1 MB) and instead installed Google Search and Google News (combined they are less than 150k). I hated the user interface of Yahoo Go.

A bit off topic, as this is about adding more stuff to your pearl. Jseah...give Windows Live Search a try as well...(OTA= http://wls.live.com). It has a really nice interface that requires very little typing, is fast, and provides (for me anyway) very complete and accurate results.
Google has more depth, but I find that for me WLS is faster and easier to use, especially one-handed. I particularly like it's Movie search capabilties...

I didn't delete any file by that name, and a search finds no such file anywhere on my system (not in Recycle Bin either), so I'm not sure what I did wrong. Somehow I managed to break something.

Yes, as MrKyoo pointed out, that has been asked in this thread already. If you didn't save the original Blackberry.alx then simply reinstall the OS and edit the Blackberry.alx file again.

How did you return the .alx to it's original? I recommend reinstalling the OS (just re-run the OS setup file.) Then edit it again. Make sure you're editing with WordPad or a good text editor.
