Don't delete setup wizard. TeleNav is a GPS/Mapping application that costs $10 per month.

Default OK to delete these files? - 02-07-2008, 10:24 PM

I've read over the optimizing memory file a few times, but I'm still a bit paranoid about deleting before running it past people more experienced than I am. Are these files safe to delete?

net_rim_bb_phone_ptt_app.cod
net_rim_tmo_five.cod
net_rim_tid_dynamic_ling_data_financial_french_10k _2.cod
net_rim_tid_dynamic_ling_data_financial_spanish_10 k_2.cod
net_rim_tid_dynamic_ling_data_french_35k_2.cod
net_rim_tid_dynamic_ling_data_french_ltr.cod
net_rim_tid_dynamic_ling_data_legal_french_10k_2.c od
net_rim_tid_dynamic_ling_data_legal_spanish_10k_2. cod
net_rim_tid_dynamic_ling_data_medical_french_35k_2 .cod
net_rim_tid_dynamic_ling_data_medical_spanish_35k_ 2.cod
net_rim_tid_dynamic_ling_data_spanish_35k_2.cod
net_rim_tid_dynamic_ling_data_spanish_ltr.cod
net_rim_bb_media_100_five_icon_library.cod
net_rim_bb_system_smileys.cod

I don't use PTT (I don't even know if Verizon offers it) and have no interest in the TMO five thing (two deletes on that one). Are the french and spanish ltr cods for special characters (I'll keep those two in that case).

Lastly (at least for now) - what exactly happens if I delete:

net_rim_bb_media_240x260_b.cod

Do I lose the program file icons that are already on there or new ones? I'd love to get that 3.5 MB but would like the icons. Is there another way to get rid of the pre-installed wallpapers?

I've ditched the non-verizon themes, but can I get rid of zen and today if I only use dimension?

Thanks.

I moved your post to the existing thread. Everything you ask has already been answered in this thread.

Your Verizon device will not load PTT regardless of whether it's in the java folder or not.

If you edited the Blackberry.alx as I outlined, then yes, delete the Tmo five .cod's and any other theme .cod's you don't want.

The languages can be removed by simply unchecking them in the application loader.

The smileys .cod is only used in BBMessenger (I think) but is so small it's hardly worth the trouble.

Yes, with the media_240x260 .cod you will lose the folder icons. That was posted about here in the thread.

i deleted the media cod and then my files for my media card were gone. The fix for it was to open media manager than exit and they came back.

Can you delete just the BB Browser and keep the MEdia Net Browser? And if so how?

I tryed to delete the BB Browser by deleteing the modules that were listed in the Browser Properties and it deleted both the BB Browser and the MEdia Net Browser.

Default Stuck - 02-09-2008, 08:58 PM

Thanks John for an awesome guide.

So I'm getting stuck at the Application Loader Wizard step -- when I click Next, I get the following error message:

Invalid Configuration
The application "Browser" cannot be loaded, because it requires the following applications that are not available: net.rim.blackberry.xml

I use Opera Mini as my Browser so I don't even really want/need Browser, but it is checked and greyed out so I can't uncheck it.

Help please

Err -- actually it was asked and answered twice -- hehe -- my fault.

I am proud to say that I successfully completed the steps in this guide that I admittedly, initally found quite daunting. For anyone else considering doing this but intimidated, I recommend doing it but FOLLOWING THE STEPS EXACTLY AS JOHN HAS WRITTEN THEM FROM THE VERY FIRST POST.

The only other tips/points I might add are these:
  • I turned my wireless connections off before I plugged it in - is this necessary John?
  • When you're editing the .alx files be sure to delete the extra spaces too -- i.e. put the ">" symbol right up against the " mark preceding it after your delete
  • For VZW make sure you download and install the DEVICE (not Desktop) OS

I have 13 MB free now -- up from 2 MB before I did this !

Thanks a million John!

Excellent! Because of your help I went from 16-22mb to 34-30mb of free space! thanks so much!! I really do appreciate your help...I was almost to the point of removing some of my applications, which I really, really did not want to do.

There's another link that is not nearly as helpful. This guy, How do I delete the preloaded media from the device? - BlackBerryFAQ.com, had me deleting all kinds of modules that must have been important even though he said they weren't because when i finished deleting all the "language files" i had lost all my fonts as well! My webbrowser wasn't working right, and even the phone was all screwed up. It would call but then it wouldn't hang up...it just froze and I had to take the battery out to disconnect the call.

FOLLOW JOHN'S DIRECTIONS AND YOU SHOULD BE JUST FINE! THANKS AGAIN! YOU'RE SO MUCH MORE HELPFUL THAN ANY DIRECTIONS FROM THE "OWNER'S MANUAL"!

There's no reason to delete languages that way. Languages can be simply checked and unchecked in Application Loader. If you delete more than I list here, you risk losing features you might want/need, or making your device unusable.

I could not find any post about anybody deleting the BB Browser and just keeping AT&T's MEdia Net Browser. Does anyone know what codes I need to delete to do this?

Ok Thanks.

I thought they were two different programs. Is there a way to Stop the BB Browser from running all the time? I see when I do the hold the Alt Keay an push the Arrow key next to the track Ball that it is always running.

Also do I have to have either the BB Browser or the MEdia Net browser on my Curve? Can I just have Opera Mini and it wont hurt my Blackberry or AT&T wont do anything?

Thanks

Hi,

New to forum and new to BB. Great product and great website.

Did the editing and was curious to see the themes for the other service providers (I have US Cellular)

Loaded everything and rebooted but went to themes in the phone and only saw the Dimension theme that comes with the new OS. Any ideas as to what I may be doing wrong? Did check the java file and noticed that the themes should be loaded.

net_rim_theme_102a_icon_320x240_w.cod
net_rim_theme_104_icon_320x240_w.cod
etc...

Thanks

You can't adjust the "file total." It's a 64Mb device but they use some for running the device and apparently don't show it as available.

On the bphone theme issue, are you running the latest version of Desktop Manager?

The latest versions of Desktop manager should pick up any installed programs.

You can look in Options >Status to see the amount of file free. While in there you can hit the menu key and select "database sizes."

So here's my question; If I backup my device and start this process and screw up or somehow delete something I need, will reinstalling everything make it work normally again? Or will I be up the creek? Im not tech savy at all and all that on the first page makes me nervous just looking at it.

If you follow my instructions exactly, you will be fine. It's a good idea to make a backup, though.

Yeah, I know if I follow exactly it will be ok. Its not that I dont trust you. I dont trust myself. I understand somethings in the instructions, but other things, I just look at like its another language. I just didnt want to delete something by accident and be screwed.

So I read (completely through) the steps and thought it cant really be that hard. Im not THAT stupid. So I did your instructions and my bb just reset and everything works. Im a bada-s. Thanks a lot for taking the time to run us dummies through all the steps. I was having to delete a lot of emails to keep space open. Now, I dont have to worry about that.

And once I was actually doing it and saw what you were writing-- you are right-- it was quite easy. Thanks again!

This is a great post, but unfortunately for me, when I edit the _vendorID= files and delete the vendor ID's, I can't re-save the the alx file, why can't I? I opened it up with wordpad and edited, and tried to resave it as the original, overwriting it, but it is saying make sure the path and file name are correct. They are! And in another instance it is saying it's denied to save. I am the admin on my computer, so what am I doing wrong?

This is a great how to guide, once I get my BB 8820 back from ColorwarePC I will be removing the themes, wallpapers, PTT and a few other junk items I neither need or want.

so john, I just wanted to thank you again for this, I cleaned off my dad's bb (I convinced him to get one) when he started complaining about his "stuff" disappearing. I got a nice free meal.

edit-one question though, in the .alx file where it lists the language description texts, what would happen if I remove those?

No need to do anything with languages. Languages are removed using application loader.

hey... i have a question about unlocking the themes. currently, i'm using v.4.2.2.170 on my 8310. i know i need to download the current OS to my PC, and the same version (yet probably different package) are available for download at the AT&T site. my question is would that mean i wouldn't have to install a new OS on my BB in order to be able to unlock the themes? i would prefer not to and just be able to unlock 2 themes.

thanks!

You are running vista. Copy the file to your desktop and make changes, then copy back to original location

[quote=John Clark;792173]Did you just get a new BB device but are unsure how to best set it up? The setup wizard removes a few things but not all that should be removed. Many of you have asked me what I do to free up memory on my devices and prevent loss of emails and call logs, etc. I've decided to list out for you exactly what I do to my device. You may want to setup your device slightly different but this is a good starting point.

I did not just purchase my BB (I've had it for about 2 months). I have the 8310 Curve (AT&T). Will this process still apply to me being that I have added several 3rd party apps and it seems as if AT&T cleaned up most of it. There is only a few (PTT, the game, and some themes (it only has 3) that I want to remove. Is there an easier way (deleting from the device itself) or is this it, and once I do this process will all my 3rd party apps be there.

Once you do this process, your third party applications will be there.

Do a backup first, of course.

Also, any applications with a license key or registration, write that down.

AND, you can always run this:
