You need to download the OS from your carrier and then install it to your PC. You skipped that step.

The disk that comes with the phone is Desktop Manager (DM). BUT you also need to install the actual Operating System (OS) for your particular phone. They are TWO SEPARATE software installs. The numbers add to the confusion since the DM version number and the OS version numbers are in some cases very similar.

The OS can be found on your carrier's website for BB or maybe even the BB website.

When you get the phone OS, you install that to your computer. It then creates the files and folders referenced in this very long thread. Then you go about doing what is referenced in the first message. (not that I have done it).

And that is all very clearly outlined in the first post.

First off, thank you for the detailed instructions, John! I read through all of the pages in this thread and didn't see this question asked, so: After I've deleted all of the preloaded pictures, is there any way to delete the now-empty "Preloaded Pictures" folder in my Media section? TIA.

Welcome to the forums!

I believe that if you do this after the OS is already loaded to the device that the folder and maybe even the thumbnails will still show on the device. However, if you reload the OS from scratch and go through these steps before loading the OS then the thumbnails will disappear. The Preloaded Pictures folder will still be there no matter what but it should be empty.

No problem. The pictures are gone but the empty folder remains.

Ok sorry for all the confusion. I guess the numbers looked so simular to me that i thought i was just downloading the same thing, it took so long as well i was getting worried it was what i already had.

Thanks!! (downloading now)

One more quick question, if you delete the voice dialing and then you choose to use it in the future, is there anyway you can get it back?

Just move the VAD files back into the Java folder and rerun the Application Loader.

Yep. This works for any app that you move into the Removed Modules folder. You can always move it back and then rerun the apploader to put it back on the device.

Ive done this twice, but I just upgraded the OS in a last ditch effort to fix this resetting problem.

I know what themes I want and dont feel like taking the time to delete all the _vendorID="xxx" files to open up all the themes available. I'll end up just deleting them all anyway. My question is can I skip this step or is it a part of the process to make it all work? I dont want to mess it up.

You can just remove the vendor tags for the themes you want, if you like.

It sounds like you attempted to download and install Desktop Manager again. You need to download and install the Handheld Operating System file in ADDITION to the Desktop Manager software.

I'll say it again. DO NOT download Desktop Manager 4.3 again. You are getting nowhere. You need the handheld OS. Until you download and install that you won't be able to do this. When you get to your carrier's download area, be sure and select your device model in the list to download the OS.

If you have OS 4.2 or later on your 8707 then make sure you are running Desktop Manager 4.2 SP2 or later. Plug in the device and run Desktop manager / Media Manager. In the lower right corner you should be able to select your device memory. Just move the file from the top to the bottom to transfer the file. It's fairly intuitive.

Success, i have the shared folder now. The problem was on my computer when i was given the drop down of all the programs to download, my computer was not letting me view all the available downloads so the only ones i could see were the top desktop manager programs which i obviously already had. I tried it at my dads house, and i could see all the options! so whenever u told me to download the OS i could not even see that as an option therefore couldnt download it...so im sorry if i caused any trouble but now its all figured out so i can follow the guide finally!

No, they are all contained in one .cod and this method just removes .cod files from the BB. It's all or nothing.

That is usually a 3rd party application causing problems. Plug in the device while the hour glass is spinning and run application Loader and see if you can remove the app you suspect may be causing it. Also, tell me what .cod's you removed.

Hi:
I just removed the two .cod's listed to remove PTT and the first 4 you listed to remove the voice dialing and I also unchecked the unwanted languages. That's it.
Thanks

Default any Mac instructions? - 03-18-2008, 08:38 PM

It looks like everything that you are doing is with Desktop Manager...

what about us Mac users that want to get rid of the stupid att theme and the locked preloaded pictures.

I was able to delete the sample video without any problem, but the themes and the preloaded pics are annoying.

any advice??

Default help with opening .alx files - 03-19-2008, 03:40 PM

Hi, John-
ok, so I got to the folder with the .alx files but couldn't open (or even find) them with wordpad or with Microsoft Works word processor. (I've looked through all the posts and found the ones about not using Notepad.)

Do I need another text editor, or am I doing something wrong?
thanks

update- I tried the Google word processor and got a message, sorry, but they don't currently work with .axl files.

As I describe in the post, you can delete all the vendor coded themes. Don't get rid of the plazmic theme reader. Then try removing the others, one at a time to see if you can get away with removing them. If you end up with a white screen and black/white icons then put the last theme you removed, back. Just trial and error.

Do I need another text editor, or am I doing something wrong?
thanks

update- I tried the Google word processor and got a message, sorry, but they don't currently work with .axl files.
If you're using Windows XP simply right click on the .alx file and select "open with." Then choose "choose program" and select WordPad. That's what I use to open them.

Thank you John, but my 8707's OS is 4.1.0.316. Now the question is how I'm going to upgrade to 4.2x?

I thought that I'd already tried that, but probably just "OPEN" and not "OPEN WITH". Nevertheless, your suggestion worked immediately.

thanks,
Steven
