I am thinking of buying a Blackberry unlocked off of Ebay to check email while I am traveling outside the US and I have a few questions, I am leaving for Taiwan & China next week and I don't really have too much time for researching:

Can I just get a data plan to check emails without a phone plan?

Can I still use the different Sims I have to get the discounted call rates?

Which model do you guys suggest? 7290 or 8700?

Thanks for your help.

Most carriers require a Voice plan, it is rare.

Yes, but your SIM will determine your data carrier.

8700, by all means.

Read these, and proceed with caution.

My bottom line, I would not buy off eBay if i were in a hurry and needed it workng shortly.

Yes you can get BB plan only but the cost goes up a bit!

actually in china does RIM have a presense yet? i thought the chinese government put it on hold for now since they have a vested interested in Redberry?

i mean for data, voice should work fine as long as the frequencies are available where you are in china.
