The PIN number is a unique identifier for each Blackberry device. If you know another Blackberry user's PIN number, you can send a PIN message to them (direct BB to BB - not thru email). This can be good if your email service is down, and I also use it for troubleshooting provisioning for my users.
Blackberry Messenger messages are also sent/received using the PIN.
Many people do publish it (have it in their signature here) so they can PIN with other BB users.
No longer a BES Admin, but it was fun while it lasted!
