Question Figuring out if a Blackberry is brand new?

Please Login to Remove!

I just a bought a blackberry 8310 that was advertised as new + never opened, but judging on the scratches, it would seem this was false advertisement

Is there a way to ask the OS any info that would indicate whether the blackberry was used (time spent turned on, data sent/recvd, call time, anything like that?). Preferably something that could not be reset by the seller..

I appreciate any help you guys can give me,
David-

I have never received a "New" blackberry that had scratches. If the user was attempting to sell as new all he would have to do is reload the OS.
Does it work ok? The box a new blackberry comes in does not contain any "bubble" plastic sealing so it may be possible the seller did not use it but somehow scratched it when checking it out.
You did not mention how bad the scratches were. A used blackberry will show wear marks near the bottom front and some on the side from pushing it into the holder.

I got the unit on ebay. It was nicked in 3 places near the speakerphone, there is a visual defect on the screen (size of a pixel), and the back cover has light scratching (what you would get by leaving the device on a table, or in a purse). Nothing that should prevent it from working normally. The scratches on the back were behind the plastic film, so I have concluded the device was definitely used.

I'm now negotiating a partial refund with the seller where I'd get to keep the unit. Otherwise I'll just sent it back for a full refund.

I have a few questions that will help me decide:
- Will AT&T cover me under their warranty (I'll call them to check but they're closed now)
- Is there a way to run diagnostics on the device to test that everything works properly (I will of course manually try to do the things it's supposed to do in addition to that)
- I'll reiterate my initial question: is there some kind of call/powertime/data counter somewhere in the device that can't be reset that I could check? In fact, even if it can be reset, I'd like to check it. Is there a "last OS reloading time" somewhere?

The device appear to work properly though I have not inserted a SIM card yet so I was able to do limited testing.

Make sure you read the FAQ about buying a used BB on ebay. Might save you some grief and problems.

If you didn't buy it directly from AT&T there is no warranty.

I've never found any kind of a life timer that tells how much use the device has seen.

When you pull the battery and reinsert, the BB will restart and run a security diagnostic check. That's the only test I've seen to tell me all systems are up and running.

You could look at the call log and see how much time has been used. I don't know if it's resettable or not. While in the Phone screen, hit the Menu key and select Status. If it's a new device that should show 0 minutes of calls.

Just thinking outloud here: On the 8700 you can press alt-cap-h and bring up a diagnostic screen, and on that screen is uptime. I have no idea if that gets reset with an OS reinstall or a security wipe, but I imagine it does. Would be interesting to test and see.

EDIT: The uptime is in seconds. I converted to days and it is obvious it was reset when I upgraded the OS, which makes sense.

There's a menu item to clear, and also clear all.

oops forgot about that. I dont think there is a way to really tell if the device has been used except perhaps maybe the log file? ALT LGLG maybe?

Hey, cool. Didn't know about that log, or I once knew and forgot about it. But there is a clear log menu item on that, too. I assume that clears one entry at a time, but didn't try.

Very interesting; thanks for the help. The call timer was at 0. The log is hard to read as the date on the device is wrong and there are so many entries. I assume even a brand new device has some amount of log entries (just from factory install of the OS etc.)
