Default primary phone numbers?

Please Login to Remove!

I have a question about the blackberry phonebook. I'm on an 8310 but figured it was a generic BlackBerry question. Is there such a thing as a primary number for a contact? e.g. Jon has a mobile and a home number in my book. If I type "J" "O" it will pull up Jon, Joe, etc. If I scroll to Jon and hit send it calls his home number because it is the top number in his file. If he had a work number, it would call work because work is above home. What I want to do (been able to do it on Nokia phones and I believe Palm/WM) is set Jon's mobile as the primary so hitting send calls his mobile unless I hover over it and chose otherwise. I have many people with multiple numbers but primarily call their cell phone. It is very inconvenient to have to hover over for a second and then select which number to call. Any suggestions?

it won't set home, work or mobile as a "default to call" number, as a default across the board.

However, (even better I think) it will always default to call the last number you called that contact on... i.e., if you call John's mobile last time, that will be your default choice next time.

If you call Jill at her home all the time, then that is your first choice next time.

I dont see any method to change the first number dialed. I would simply put the "primary" number in the first slot if that solves the problem. you will just have to remember who has what where.
If you try to put a tag on the end of the number like "W" the cell system will reject the call.

As far as the last number dialed deal, I think that applies only to the call log. Not if I search in the address book. Am I correct?

You find it inconvenient to choose from a list of 2 or 3 numbers for the contact? Isn't this just a bit nit-picky?

It might be nit-picky but since my last phone did what he has asked about, I'm used to that behavior - I could assign a particular number for "JOE" so if I merely searched the phonebook, the number I had assigned as PRIMARY would be dialed. Then, if that's not the one I wanted, I could scroll down to the one I wanted that time. (and I could use the call-log to dial the last one if I recalled which one I had used that last time)

I'm too new to the BB to know if this is possible with some reordering or not.

Great value add...really. I didn't know there was a "Nit-Picky" monitor in this forum. Glad to know you have that covered for all of us.

Well count me among the nit-pickey because it just frosts me when I dial from address book and type the contact's name in and up pops his/her fax number as the first selection. This happens more often than not. I can't ever remember dialing a fax machine from a cell phone of any description (except, of course by accident.)

I have often wondered if there were some kind of preference setting that would allow me to pick one of the numbers I commonly call, either a work number or a cell number primarily as the first selection that comes up.

In either case I never want the fax number to pop up first on my BB but all my business contacts, since they synchronize with the laptop have the fax number as part of the data.

In some cases I've created two separate address book entries for someone to avoid that problem. One could be named Joe's fax and the other Joe's cell or whatever.

Super Moderator Nonimations for Nit-Picky Mod are now closed!

The only way to solve this that I can think of is to have only the one number in the contact under the phone fields. Leave the other phone fields blank and enter any other numbers for a contact into the notes field. Then you can see 'em but they won't be on the list of numbers to dial.

Default Primary Phone

Even more surprising is that Blackberry does nothing with a 'Primary' phone from MS Exchange.

My dilemma is more from the development side: I have created a windows service for syncing SQL server data with Exchange. My SQL server has a primary indicator for the phone numbers. I load that value into the 'Primary' phone number in MS Exchange, but that number is not strored in the BlackBerry...
