Question 3rd party App to avoid getting charged for IM Messaging?

Please Login to Remove!

Hello All,
I just received my bill and as of now.. AT&T has hammered the daylights out of me by charging me for Instant Messages that I always thought... would fall under my unlimited data plan.
That being said, I called Customer Service and the person on the other end explained that they do not fall under data but are charged as text messages. I tried reasoning with him but he told me that if I do not wish to upgrade, I should just google around for a few third party apps that ATT "Does not recommend" but seem to work well to fix this issue. He wanted to help, but I can see how it could have been risky for him.
So my question for you guys... Where can I find such an app...? I use Yahoo and Gtalk and I need to find an app that lets me log into their messenger service and at the same time... save me from being charged for IMs.
Any Suggestions?
Regards,
Sonny

Just search for JiveTalk on this board. It is not a free program but low priced but compared with your overage probably nothing! You can find other free ones but in my opinion JiveTalk is hands down the best.

Good luck!

JiveTalk - BeeJive :: JiveTalk mobile messenger - instant messaging to go

NOW--remember, if you still send and receive SMS messages, you will be charged for SMS messages from your carrier. There is NO way to avoid being charged for SMS messages when you actually do use them.

JiveTalk will use your data package, but it does not take the place of intercepting your SMS messages your friends might send you and keep you from being charged. There is NO application to make your SMS messages free.

Yup. I just wanted to save on IM-Messaging. I do not mind paying for SMS ( I also have a 200 SMS msg plan). Installing the trial version right now.

Thanks guys! I know I probably should have used the "Search" Button first. Will do so from this point on.

I agree jivetalk is excellent. I have been trying out gtalk since because I didn't want to pay for jive talk again. I just got a new BB (8310). Does gtalk use texting or is it like jivetalk and use data?

I could be wrong but I think Gtalk uses SMS....that was the start of this whole thread.

I remember reading that gtalk works around sms and counts under data. But I cannot attest to that. I use Gtalk and YM extensively and I cannot zero down to the ones that were charged as SMS.
That being said... Jivetalk = Pure Awesomeness! Will try this out for a few more days and then buy the full version

JS,

What about Yahoo? The OP stated they were being charged SMS fees. The listed Yahoo and Gtalk.

Yahoo Messenger is also in the data package, it is not SMS.

I really don't know, he probably racked up a pile of SMS. I used GTalk for a while, I know it is Data only, and everything I read on BlackBerry.com and on here it says Yahoo is Data only.

So, I am confused too. But I wonder if the OP didn't have a data plan and got slammed with some data charges also?

Ok.. may be I can help clear things out here. There are two types of plans that you can take.. (there may be others.. but I know these two exist)
1.Unlimited data with unlimited messaging (this includes IM) ($44.99?)
2.Unlimited data (Messaging not included) (29.99)

I have the later, Hence the charges. This is what the customer service rep told me. Please correct me if I am wrong.

Yep, if you have unlimited data and use your SMS messages, you will still get charged for SMS. Data does not include SMS.

However, GoogleTalk and Yahoo IM do not use SMS, they use Data. They are not your culprit.
