Default is it really that hard to make a url shortcut icon?

Please Login to Remove!

so I'm thinking I have this great idea to use our intra/extranet to make data collection apps for my pda phone users, and I can push down a shortcut icon through BES no problem.
I mean, making a url shortcut on my treo is easy, my 8130 should be even easier.

THen I come across all these threads with javascript and php code, talk of needing to compile things and purchase RIM licenses.

Is there no straight forward way to do it? I hate to repost questions that have been asked before but it seems odd that this is as difficult as it seems

thanks!

Yes, it's pretty involved to do.
No, there's no "straight forward" way to do it.
Your BlackBerry is not a Treo.

How about setting your users default web page to a real simple list of links to your data collection apps?

Short of pushing one down from the BES, the above is the best thing going. It's a great app!

Yes it can be done. But I don't think it's that easy. It's called a push app. There is a gui floating around where you essentially modify an icon and there is a link to a URL associated to that icon. You then push that icon to the pin or email address of the device. Wala you now have an icon on your BB and once you clik on it like any other app it launches the browser and as long as you have MDS turned on you can access your intranet sights.

That's the push down from the BES. The above link can be used on any BB regardless of BES/BIS connection.

Yeah but if he wants to use his intranet sites / blackberry browser which uses MDS to browse the internal sites doesnt he have to use BES/MDS to access those internal sites?

yeah I'd looked at web shortcuts, that's certainly an option. I'm not sure if it can be pushed down via BES to all users though.
MDS won't be necessary for browsing, as the site in question is available on the public internet.
I'm going to look a bit further into it. Setting the default browser page to my intranet page is certainly an option, though it's a bit of a cop out

If using the recommended Blackberry Web Shortcuts, what do I do once the zip file is downloaded? Where do I extract the files and how do I get the end product on my blackberry? Thanks.

Sorry, I always use the OTA download. I have no idea what's in the zip file but I bet you'll need to use the app loader in Desktop Manager.
