Do you have to install BES on top of exchange? or can it just be installed on a domain controller?

I'm not an authority or expert by any stretch of the imagination. However, I am willing to share my experiences.

I just got BES up and running on our domain. I was really jittery about installing it either directly on my Exg server or on my domain controller. I set up a small stand-alone server and installed the BES software on it. It took care of installing the MSDE for the database, but there were a few things I had to do initially to get it started.

I had to restart at least once during the installation and a couple of reboots since then (from windows updates and such), so I'm glad I did it on it's own server.

You can install BES on a member server. This is the preferred method.

Correction to my post. I meant a member server, not a stand-alone server. (I noticed my mistake when I saw X14's post).
