Default Verizon forcing data plan... is that true?

Please Login to Remove!

One week ago a bought a Blackberry Pearl 8130 with verizon and they said that I needed to get a data plan because they had a contract with rim. Is this 100% true or there is a way to get around it?
Any help please.

This is true. If you get a BlackBerry from Verizon they require you to get one of the BlackBerry data plan.

Question Now, is it a way to make me pay more??? Or a good deal????

So...after talking to about a million people from Verizon CS, finally I got a girl on the phone that understood my situation ( wanted a discount on the 8830 and willing to renew 2 years, since I've ALWAYS paid full retail on all my phones with them) and let me do the 2 year renewal + discounts.
She told me to get the data plan $44.99, that way I'd get an EXTRA $100 off the device.
What I forgot to ask her is if I do pick the $44.99 - to get the discount of course - if I can, later, change to the $30 in case the other one isn't what I need.
Anyway, long story short..here's the deal I can get:

$ 519.99 device would become

$ 399 - 2 yr contract

-$100 = mail in rebate
-$100 = off because I got the $44.99 plan

= $199 for the 8830

Should I just go ahead and do it??

Thanks in advance everyone =)

I'm fairly certain you can get the $100 credit with the $30 plan. (I know I did!) The only reason you would need the $45 plan is if you are going to be on BES.

All carriers are supposed to enforce a data plan. Blackberry or RIM requires it based on contract signed with the carriers RIM can do audits on accounts and if they see a blackberry without a plan they will slap the most costly one on there without warning.

Ok, after calling them a few times, finally got the 8830, discounted + the $30 plan. I am happy and can't wait for Fedex to get here

That's never been the case in my experiences with TMO and at&t. It might be true but neither carrier has ever required us to have a BB data plan.

I almost wish the other carriers would enforce it like Verizon. It would stop all the n00b messages here lately about "why can't I use my [email/browser/IM/etc] without a data plan? I heard someone said you can do it, can someone please tell me how?"

Hey first post!!

I was just told yesterday that I could get a Blackberry Pearl w/o a data plan, but would forefit the $50.00 rebate available now. That makes the Pearl cost $150.00 w/a 2yr renewal.

Default Verizon enforcement

I have had an 8100 with AT&T for a year and a half now - I have a full data plan so this isn't an issue for me, but my sister has an 8100 with AT&T and no data plan and has had it for nearly a year, no problems.

My wife has Verizon and wanted a Pearl - she doesn't care about the email and internet (her prerogative, right?), she only wanted it for the calendar and task list and size of the handset. I ordered the phone online without adding the plan, then talked to a rep yesterday who said she could just pay for usage, then trying to activate it today, said there is no physically possible way for Verizon to activate an ESN for a RIM device without adding a data plan. I went up 3 levels and same response. Doesn't matter that their rep said usage only, and the agreement I have from Verizon said the same thing.

Anyone know who I can write a letter to, complaining?

Cell Phones, Cell Phone Plans, Cell Phone Accessories - Verizon Wireless there is a contact us link. you likely wont get anywhere with this, your best bet is to just return the device. companies respond to lost revenue ALOT faster than they do do letters.

As far as I know this is only available with tmo.
With tmo, if you have, say a texting plan, you can call them and have them activate some blackberry enabler thing, and you can use data as pay per use. Tmo is the only company I have heard that does this though.
I do agree, however, that they should all just require it. After all, isn't a blackberry first and foremost, a phone with awesome email ability?
