What the BlackBerry Update Means for You

BlackBerry owners rejoice! The upcoming BlackBerry 4.5 software will vault your Pearls and Curves into the top ranks of multimedia devices. We got RIM to explain, model by model and server by server, what the new software will give existing BlackBerry owners. (Version 4.5 used to be called 4.3.1, if you're really plumbed into the BlackBerry landscape.)

There's a lot of awesome stuff here, with multimedia streaming support, Microsoft Office document editing and HTML e-mail support at the fore. We're still waiting for RIM to tune up its Web browser, though—it's falling behind the options available on Windows Mobile, Symbian, and the iPhone.

Some of the new features are handheld-only; some require server upgrades. If you're on BlackBerry Enterprise Server, your IT department will need to upgrade; if you're on BlackBerry Internet Service, you'll need to wait a few months for your carrier to upgrade. I've marked server features with an (S), and handheld features with an (H) to show what you'll be able to do immediately.

Verizon, T-Mobile, and Alltel all confirmed that you'll be able to upgrade existing BlackBerries to the new software. We're still waiting for word from T-Mobile and Sprint. The software will arrive within a few months, but the carriers and RIM aren't being any more specific than that.

Here's the scoop by model number.

If you have a BlackBerry Pearl 8100 or BlackBerry 8800, you'll get:
• Spell check
• BlackBerry Maps with Points of Interest • Improved media player with playlist support and automatic playlist generation • Voice note recording • Streaming support for YouTube and Sling Player • Bluetooth stereo music (H) • Microsoft Office document editing with DocumentsToGo • Native format attachment downloading • HTML e-mails • Over-the-air device upgrades • Free/busy calendar lookup • Searching the server for old e-mail messages

If you have a BlackBerry Pearl 8130, you'll get:
• Automatic playlist generation in the media player • Microsoft Office document editing with DocumentsToGo • Native format attachment downloading • HTML e-mails • Over-the-air device upgrades • Free/busy calendar lookup • Searching the server for old e-mail messages

If you have any BlackBerry Curve or the BlackBerry 8820 or 8830, you'll get:
• BlackBerry Maps with Points of Interest • Improved media player with playlist support and automatic playlist generation • Voice note recording • Video recording on Curve models • Streaming support for YouTube and Sling Player • Microsoft Office document editing with DocumentsToGo • Native format attachment downloading • HTML e-mails • Over-the-air device upgrades • Free/busy calendar lookup • Searching the server for old e-mail messages

If you have a BlackBerry 8700 or 8703e, you'll get:
• Spell check
• BlackBerry Maps with Points of Interest • New pictures and ringtones applications • Voice note recording • Microsoft Office document editing with DocumentsToGo • Native format attachment downloading • HTML e-mails • Over-the-air device upgrades • Free/busy calendar lookup • Searching the server for old e-mail messages

A few months could be 18. Wonder if they will do a version that supports 8700 etc.

actually, id rather take both updates to be honest. if i had to choose the BES/BIS upgrade would be the best over all. the handheld updates would follow.

Does anyone know if 4.5 will support categories in the calendar app?

I've looked around and can't find an answer (so it's probably no!)

That's what I want to know too, that will just make my life much easier, without exchange and BES categorized email so just so important for people like me can't leave without their outlook

4.3 supports this. You can use multiple calendars and create entries for every email you have on the device. you can then set the color of these different email calendars so that all appointments show as color coded. it would stand to reason that 4.5 and higher would only continue this

But that's limited to the # of email accounts you have set up and I don't find it very flexible. I use far more categories than email accounts. I'm referring to actual user defined categories like the ones in Outlook.

Default Categories for calendar entries

pdone, did you find the answer on this. We also rely on categories - we use them to trigger which appointments are billable via our billing software, so are essential to operations.

We have had to stick to Windows handsets as a consequence, but would prefer the admin control and reliability of BB's - but categories in appointments are a deal-breaker for us.

Any info gladly received.
Thanks. Jamie.

Unfortunately not the answer you or I wanted. I now have a Storm with 4.7 and that doesn't have categories either. Obviously it's not a priority for RIM, can't quite figure out why. Maybe someday...
