I am curious if anyone knows if there is an automated process on purging pending emails from users on the BES? We have over 1000 BB users on our BES and pending messages always gets high if we don't pay attention to it. Something that does an automatic purge every week or so. Thanks.

There's a reason that the messages are pending. That's where you should focus your attention.
Blindly purging them is not a good course of action in my opinion.

I know if I was on vacation for two weeks and had a few hundred messages pending for my BB... I certainly wouldn't want someone to simply purge them without my knowledge.

You should find out why they're pending, and address that issue directly.

I understand your concern. However, we can't have these messages weighing down our server. Just today we had 11,000 emails pending and it was weighing down our server. We can not have that. Also if you are on vacation for a couple of weeks and you have 200 plus emails pending i am guessing you would want to sit at your computer to go through those. I highly doubt you would go through those emails on your Blackberry.

To answer your question, I haven't heard of an application that will purge pending messages.

However, I am going to have to agree with Penguin here. Do you have users who are constantly out of coverage? Do they just turn their devices off and not use them? Have you talked with the users who have the high pending counts to find out if something is wrong with their devices?

Before purging the pending stuff, I'd recommend finding out what is causing it...otherwise you're just 'fixing' a symptom and not the cause.

It's not something that should be automated, so I believe you'll have a hard time finding a solution to this one.

The next problem he will have is when his executives call to complain of lost email. I wonder if he would like to loose an email from his boss.
He complains about 11k emails. The company I work for does that a minute and we have over 9700 BBxxx8217;s. I don't think I would like to see emails purged by some IT type.

What would be a good reason to purge email then? Why would there be a purge option on the BES? I know im taking a lot of flak for this but i don't think we are doing the worst thing in the world. I just had a question about it but i guess i see where everyone stands on it now.

Honestly, the only time I would purge them is if support (RIM) tells me to for some reason.

Otherwise, if the user reports they are missing messages, I would first try to find out why they are showing a high pending count - things like being out of coverage, their device being off, their device not connecting to the network properly, etc.

set a schedule to restart the controller service that will "purge" your pending queue.

Whether a user has a 1 message or 1000 messages pending for delivery to their BlackBerry device... restarting the controller service is not going to purge these pending messages.

Even rebooting the BES, and stopping/restarting every service won't purge the pending messages.

I'd venture to say that if your BES is behaving this way, it's probably broken.

Not to mention with SOX compliance issues, purging all of those emails might put you at significant risk down the road. With 11k emails pending in one day, sounds like it's a fairly big company, and you shouldn't open yourself up to that kind of risk. I think everyone here is trying to get you to understand that having 11k pending messages is a symptom of a huge problem, and you should figure out why they aren't being delivered to the users. If you fix the problem, you won't have the pending email problem any longer.

No, it will not.
The only way to reduce the number of pending messages is to actually have those messages delivered to the handheld, or removed from user's mailbox so they are cancelled for delivery.

So how do you push the pending messages to the device?
