7730 Password problem "invalid password. password too short"

when my BB7730 is starting up, there appears the message "new password"
If i type a new one, or any password, i get back: invalid password. password too short"

I have tested it 10 times with a wrong Password, and hoped that the BB will reset but no chance. i also downgraded from handheld Version 4.00.185 to V 3.7.1.73. hardresets didn't help.
I set a very very long password, the complete password field was filled with characters, but nothing will work.
Any Advice, any ideas?

Did you ever get this to work?

I have a new 7130e that wants a longer password than my previous one (dropped it). I can't figure out why it wants a longer password..
