Any way of syncing address book for BIS users?
 

I've read and read on this subject, but had no luck finding a way of syncing my address book over the air as a BIS user.

Has anyone found any tool for doing this?

there is an application currently in beta that supports this. OTA Sync for BIS users, check the aftermarket section

I just found these guys, and am looking into syncML: O-Sync

They claim to have it all solved.

It's not necessarily a simple puzzle...proceed w/caution, and back up your calendar/contacts/tasks, etc., before you start syncing away.

never had my google address book pushed to my device. did you have to set it up?

I don't believe so....I just created the Gmail account and the Address Book sync'd up.

Oh, yes, I do have the Gmail application.

that would probably be where it comes from. I have google sync and no other google apps.

Last time I checked, Google did not support any Address Book synchronisation. I will check again tonight.

The solution for BIS users to sync seems to be SyncML. This is a standard for synchronising mobile phones with an internet database. The database can then sync with Outlook, Outlook Express, even Thunderbird. It depends on what the database is capable of.

SyncML is installed on most mobile phones, but not BlackBerry. BlackBerry users need to download a third party application. There are two available - iPhone Sync | BlackBerry Sync | Mobile Sync | Contacts Sync | Outlook Sync software at Nexthaus and Funambol: Open Source: Community Projects. The latter is free, but it cannot connect via BIS, and hence does not fall under some unlimited data plans.

Users will also need an online database. The two most popular ones are scheduleworld.com and zyb.com. scheduleworld.com is a small enterprise (one man band maybe) but it allows syncing with Outlook and even Google Calendar. Zyb only syncs between the phone and it's own online database (though you can sync multiple phones to it).

I have not tried the scheduleworld sync with Outlook as I don't use it.

A lot of SyncML applications don't support blackberry though which is a shame.

I really wish I knew what I did to get my contacts to sync with my Gmail account.

I have 118 contacts that somehow made it from my BB (they were put on the BB using an Advanced restore) to my Gmail account wirelessly. I did NOT enter any of them into Gmail....

I do have the Gmail app installed on my BB, so I believe I installed that after the contacts sync'd.

Did the contacts show up in Gmail with all the info, or email addresses only? My Gmail adds every email I receive to my address book, which is why I'm not sure I'd ever want them syncing. Don't need 32 address on my BB...

It appears to have added only name and email address. Some of the people in there I haven't had any email contact with in several months (even a year), and I only set up the Gmail account in December.

Must be the Gmail app doing it then. Have you tested to see if it's a two-way sync? If you add or change something in Google will it add to your phone?

I'm testing...I added Mickey Mouse in Google and Bugs Bunny on my BB. Will see if they sync in the next hour or so (I'm used to BES syncing on my other BB so this wait is killin' me!)

Maybe you should've used Speedy Gonzalez and Road Runner...

I also deleted a few from Google...will see if they disappear from my BB.
