Default hard/soft reset difference

What is the difference between the soft/hard reset?

I know the alt+cap+del or a power off/on = soft reset && a battery-pull or alt+cap+del (2x) = hard reset. But what is the difference, and what happens differently?

I had a user with an issue, that pulling the battery didn't work until we left the battery out for more than 20 seconds, which made me wonder why the intial battery pulls didn't work and if those were considered 'soft resets'...

this blackberry knowledge article isn't that helpfull...

Awesome, that is very helpfull! Thanks!

(although still wondering why the different length of time that the battery was out made a difference in solving the issue)
