No, it only uses data. It doesn't use the voice network from your carrier.

There is no SKYPE client for the. Plus EDGE bandwidth doesn't make for very good call quality.

I have no experience with IM for SKYPE so I cannot comment on that.

Exclamation ISkoot - Skype VOIP and Chat Software For The Blackberry

Skype Client Freeware

ISkoot is freeware that enables you to use Skype on your mobile phones and now the Blackberry. The software is still in BETA. ISkoot has an agreement with Skype to use their network. Now you can use your Skype account to make calls and send instant messages.
ISkoot uses your voice plan to connect to their server when you make and receive Skype calls so be careful if your not in North America , you might get long distance charges. Although Iskoot is still working on trying to improve their software the chat function works great and helps me get in touch with everyone in my office.

I'm hoping Iskoot will release a new version that uses BIS, BES or TCP to make calls instead of dialing a US number which will make you incur local charges. Just remember that although Iskoot is free using it will still cost you.

Until they make some changes Iskoot still has a great Instant messaging function which makes it worth using.

ISkoot currently supports the following Phones: ( local charges apply when you make voice calls)
BlackBerry7100
BlackBerry7500
BlackBerry7700
BlackBerry8100 Pearl
BlackBerry8300 Curve
BlackBerry8700
BlackBerry8800

There is no legitimate Skype client for the Blackberry. Full Stop.

All the BB Skype clients are complete hacks and should be avoided. They are security risks as well, as you are giving your Skype credentials to them to run a Skype instance on your behalf in their server farm. And we all know how much stuff the Skype client leaves behind when it is shut down...

Sadly, it doesn't look like Skype is interested in porting to mobile platforms any more. Their WinMo client isn't even kept up to date. And they've been promising an S60 client for what, over two years now?

I am confused.. how can it be VOIP if it uses voice to connect??? Unless I am missing something how can this even be called a Skype client if it is not 100% data? Or is this some spam message with someone posting their own product in every chat they can find?

PDAs really don't have adequate bandwidth for a decent (business) quality voice call. Maybe with WiFi or EVDO, but certainly not with EDGE.

I use the iskoot software. It's not the best program in the world but it gets the job done in a pinch. I can chat when I need to and make calls to my contacts like I would on the computer.

As others have commented, there is no program that is going to be the equal to working on a pc. But it works when I need it.

FWIW the Skype client for Maemo works great!

They have been working on official clients on a variety of devices. Probably just not the BlackBerry since most BlackBerry users would rather just have SIP.

Not yet available on our platform, but it looks as though Skype is working on it:

The way these Skype clients work on the blackberry is pretty simple. You log into skype via the blackberry. If you wish to send an IM it works over the data network. If you wish to make an actual call, it takes that call information and their back-end server makes the call, and then that back-end server calls you on your voice line. There server acts like an operator. The problem is, sometimes the caller you are calling answers the phone before you are even connected to that call. It often doesn't function well at all.

I bought the Skype client and after a few days deleted it. Worthless.

Hopefully the iPhone does it right.
