I have a BB 8100 that was connected to my company BES, and was therefore required to have password protection imposed by BES policy.

I now have a new BB, and it replaced my 8100 on the BES, and the 8100 was disconnected.

I am trying to disable the password requirement, but it will not allow that option, even though it is no longer connected to the server. I tried a complete wipe but no good.

Of course, my company only supports the new device now that it is the one registered.

Any help is appreciated.

You will have to remove the IT policy from the 8100!

Is the company allowing you to keep the 8100?

Yes, for personal use.

ditto what EZ said, remove IT Policy, see the FAQ with step by step, in the FAQ site.
