Default Data Only Devices

Please Login to Remove!

I am running BES 4.0 with 20 Cingular 7290s and soon they will be replaced with 7100Gs. All right, I am trying to get some of my IT staffers BlackBerrys but there is some politics here with IT vs. everyone else. Since BlackBerrys have a cell phone, the perception is that IT gets cell phones but why not others in the organization. I explained to my manager than we can buy BlackBerrys and just enable the data service but there is the perception. So, here is my question....are there any data only devices out there that work on BES 4.0?

BB model 5790. Check it out on the RIM web site. It is like the older 957 models (data only) but is written in J2ME instead of C++. Uses the older Mobitex data network - no GSM, GPRS, CDMA or anything else fancy.

For data only I think this is as good as it gets: http://www.blackberry.com/products/b...erry5790.shtml

You can also buy a 7xxx device with data only. Just ask your cell provider.

The 5000 series can't be upgraded to OS 4.0 only something like 2.5 I think.

I know I could buy a 7XXX device data only but there is no "physical" differentiation if it has data only or not. I am in search of device where it has absolutely no cell phone capabilities...purley data..almost like a text pager.

Okay, thanks for the 5790 info...how do I know if it works on Cingular and BES 4.0? Also, where can I get the 5790?

Thanks!

Yes the 5790 works on BES.

No, it is not Cingular; it runs on the Mobitex network, which used to be owned by Cingular but was sold.

There is a "Buy Now" option on the web page I referenced before.

Stonent - the 5790 runs 4.0 (it is NOT the same as the 5810/5820 series).

AH ok, I guess I got it confused with the data only devices we had here once which I thought were the last ones made. I guess I was wrong.

Mann, at $499 per 5790...that's a lot. Any 3rd party vendors?

Like I said, call cingular or tmobile and say I need a 7290 without phone service. I talked to our phone guy here and they said it is possible for them to get one but our rate plan is so low they typically don't want it.

Nextel has a webmail system. It works like a redirector to your Nextel phone...other than that you may look at the 957's.
