Lightbulb How to set custom text message tones to contacts

Please Login to Remove!

Okay so I had a razor and I loved hearing a certain tone for the text message so i could know who was texting without looking, sadly my blackberry didn't have this features, but I figured it out for all you razor switchers!!!

One other note I have an 8300 Curve but I think it should be pretty similar for the other blackberries.

Step One:
Go to the Profiles options, scroll and click Advanced

Step two:
Once you click Advanced all your different profile should show up, press the Menu button and scroll and selcect New Profile

Step three:
Give your profile a name, I put the contact I was adding a ringtone for, for example I'll use "jane". type Jane(or watever) into the name line. Next you want to change your custom settings for this for this contact. If it's just the ringtone and text message tone you want to change scroll Phone and SMS text and change the ringtone to your preference. After you've made all your wanted changes, press the trackball and save.

Step Four
After you save it should take you back to the screen with a list of your profiles and Jane should appear in that list. Next click the Menu button once more and scroll and click New Exception

Step five:
In the exception line you might also want to type the name of the contact. Next scroll to the From line, click your trackball and go to add name. Scroll and click the contact(s) you want to have the ringtones you just customized. After you've added the names, scroll to the use profile line, it should have Active Profile, click your trackball and scroll to the new profile you just added. Click trackball and save

Step six
this will take you back to the profile home. the exception must be checked in order for it to override whatever profile you have active.

********NOTE***********
the exception will also override silent and vibrate modes, so uncheck the exceptions if you are going into those modes, or you can simply chose the profile that says phone off, it will cancel out the exceptions, but this profile can't be modified

Let me know if this confusing, I can clarify

Welcome to the forums, and thank you for a nice summary of the process. I suspect that it may have been posted before, but you have done a good job of summarizing the steps for an often-asked process.

Should be the same as long as the BB supports profile exceptions.

Profiles > select the profile that you use > scroll down to advanced > BB button > Edit > scroll to the email that you want set up > click > select tune > make sure that you save it.

Default not working

hi....
i tried the method for using exceptions in order to set a specific ringtone for a person i know, when they send SMS. but that is not working. i have the 8300 curve. what am i doing wrong? i followed the directions exactly. is anyone else having problems? my phone worked for a second, with one person, but then when i tried it for another person it just played my standard ringtone.

I'm using this method with these directions and it works as adviertised. The only problem is that it often picks up the last used custom tune on contacts that are not set to an exception. Makes it a bit of a pain but not so much so that I have canceled it out yet.

Default Using a custom profile w/ exception means the Quiet profile won't work

Using this method works to add a custom SMS tone for certain contacts, but using this method also means that those contacts who are marked as exceptions will not follow the Quiet or Off profile rules.

So, if I go to a theater or to bed and I don't want my phone to ring, but I still want to see missed calls, then my contacts with "custom SMS tones" will still make my phone ring if they call while my phone is in Quiet or Off mode.

I don't want this to sound offensive, but it would be nice if support was added to add custom SMS tones directly to a contact without using a work-around.

It's not a workaround. This is how profile exceptions work. However, RIM apparently overlooked profile exceptions overriding Quiet and Off profiles.

Default Off is silent

I apologize, I just realized that the "Off" profile does silence everything, but I was right about the "Quiet" profile still ringing for exceptions even if the phone is set to not ring.

Either way, it'd still be great (in a future version) to be able to set a custom SMS tone just as easily as a custom phone ring tone can be set.

Something I found out about this is that if you have an existing Custom Tune exception as done thru the Address book for that contact that you have just created the work around it will not work. You need to delete the previous exception then the new work around as described above will work.

BTW... This is a workaround as just creating an exception does not acheive the same result. You have to create both a new profile and a new exception so this is a work around to the standard exception not allowing for the use of custom tunes for anything other than calls for a contact.
