With these accounts there should be little to no delay from receiving the email to the notification on your device. the BIS checks continously on gmail and yahoo, and since there is no mailbox for the carrier.blackberry.net account (the device is the mailbox) it is instant.

Good post. Now if BIS finds mail within one of those five 3 minute periods, will it start a new set of five 3 minute periods?

Sith, I have understood it was two minute intervals, three. My BIS seems to work on two.

it is 5 cycles of 3 mintues (equaling the 15minute cylcle) then it goes back to 15min. the 2 mintues would throw off that 15 minute interval that the BIS polls on, would have to be 7.5 cycles of 2, which wouldnt make sense.

I agree. This 15 min interval thing is disappointing. As I understood it, I thought people were using Blackberry email like SMS. If I would have known about the 15 minute interval when I was bying the device I might have stayed with a system where you can determine your own polling interval on the device itself.

@Sith--I am going to time my intervals again. Not disagreeing with you, but I really thought the intervals were 2 minutes. Eitherway, doesn't matter, just a curiousity.

From what I gather you get full control over the interval if you have BES. Can you set up a BES on your home PC?

name any PDA phone with nearly as good a battery life as the 88xx series. 21-30 days of standby out of the box. Winmo on activesync, or better yet a Palm running Winmo you are lucky to get a day out of it. The BlackBerry is set up this way for a reason. If you want instant email, use the free address you get for activating a data plan, or use BES. Just because you didnt research the product BEFORE purchasing means nothing. If you want a device that does something else, the solution is simple. Get another device.

If you want to diminish the gap and have real time e-mail flow, get a hosted BES service.

As to whether you can run BES on a PC at home, my comments is that BES is a server based tool which must be tightly integrated into your e-mail server.

You need a mail server to use BES. you also need access to admin credentials on said mail server. Unite will give some BES type features.

Ok, thanks for all the feedback guys. Didn't realize that the Blackberry had so much battery power. Seems like I just need to get this whole forwarding thing sorted then I'm pretty much there.

It has the battery life it does because the devices does literally nothing to get the first chunk of the email. the backend server does all the work, and the device receives data. it doesnt check for it at all, so if you arent using the phone it can site for quite a while.

What if your external e-mail account (Non-BB/Gmail/Yahoo/Etc.) is set to IMAP like mine is. Are we getting IMAP IDLE pushes or is it still being checked every X minutes like POP?

IMAP IDLE is currently not enabled in North america for the bis. It was for a short time last summer, but had a few major issues.

If your GMAIL account is setup as imap, then you are not getting push email.

If you just integrate it using your email address/password, it integrates using a push based service that google and RIM have deployed. Same with yahoo, and other small business accounts (Godaddy hosted).

You used to be able to get push email using Mail connector for Exchange, but that of course is no more.

I dont know what you guys are talking about I just sent my BB (BIS) a email from my Outlook based account, and not even 1 second after hitting the send button my BB said "you've got mail"
