Spectec Says microSD Wi-Fi Card Still Coming… in July | PhoneNews.com

Quote:
Many readers have asked PhoneNews.com what the status is of Spectec’s SDW-823, the world’s first microSD Wi-Fi card.

The card is gaining in interest after the launch of the CDMA version of the HTC Touch on both Sprint, and now Verizon Wireless (as the XV6900). Both devices are flagship Windows Mobile phones, but lack Wi-Fi.

Spectec originally announced the device last August, and intended to ship it before 2008. However, Spectec encountered both “marketing strategy and some technical issues” which prevented its launch. Spectec now expects to complete the SDW-823 in May, submit it for regulatory approval through June, and launch the device in July.

** Moved to Handheld Forum ** as there is no indication this will work on a BlackBerry.

When you turn on your phone, does it return the favor? Welcome to BlackBerry!

Fingers crossed that it will work! That'd be top of my purchases list. Any indication of price thus far?

There is no evidence of existence, much less price.

I can't imagine how this will work in ANY phone, without a driver being written for it. Its a network device and needs a driver, no matter what its hardware interface is - microSD, USB or whatever. The article talks about interest in using it with two different Windows Mobile phones, and its entirely possible that the manufacturer will ship it with a driver for Win Mobile. I haven't heard of RIM providing an interface to allow device drivers to be written, but I could be wrong as I'm not a developer. But without a device driver, this device has about the same odds of working as if you bought a readily available USB WiFi device and plugged it into the USB port on the BlackBerry.

I just checked the Spectec site - and sent an editorial review request if the product has a decent amount of memory aboard and is BlackBerry compatible - BUT...

I looked closely at the specs & the text & didn't see ANYTHING to suggest that it incoroprates any flash memory at all.

This reply from the company should end this thread:
Thank you for the mail.
I am afraid, the coming microSDIO WiFi card 802.11n #SDW-823 won't build in memory, nor able to work on Blackberry.
Instead, it will still follow our standard to work with SDIO enabled handheld devices integrated Windows OS.
