I am a total BB newbie when it comes to anything and everything. I currently have Cingular GSM service and have a Motorola V220 phone with regular voice plan, no data. I ordered a BB 7280 from E-Bay and planned to simply insert my SIM card into the device. I know that this will work as far as voice service goes. I don't ever intend on using the e-mail or messaging of the BB (I know, I know---I'm just a high school kid...I like the organizer features and the phone looks cool, of course)...Now, when I insert my SIM card, if I am not mistaken, Cingular will recognize that I have a BB device...Will they demand that I purchase a data plan? Will I be up poop creek without a paddle? Any help is greatly apprectiated; looking forward to becoming a member of the Blackberry community.
You should have no problem using voice when you swap the SIM, as long as the BB you bought on eBay is either Cingular-branded to not locked to service provider.
Cingular is not going to demand you purchase a data plan, they just won't give you any data access without one. You will probably see "Data Connection Refused" on the top of your BB screen instead of the current network name (Cingular) all the time, though.
I would have suggested maybe a pda instead of a bb. A bb I think might have been a waste.

Hey, I'm a HUGE fan of the BB. Been a RIM evangelist for years but I'll say, it does make a nice organize and cheaper than a PDA. I have a friend who has a 7230 without data for the contact/calandar org features and loves it. He also does a lot of sms and it is so much easier to do sms messages than a phone. So, Hunter, I'm with you if that is what you want to do.
