Question Need help - Best way to forward messages from Exchange? - 05-15-2008, 07:58 AM

I'm on BIS, and there aren't enough people here to really justify BES. Given that, what is the best solution to getting forwarded emails from Exchange at certain hours?

While I am at work, I am usually close to my desk, so I don't really need push email to my Blackberry.

But I would like to get my work emails forwarded during the evenings and on weekends.

The solutions I have seen are the following:

-Blackberry Redirector
-POP account on the BB
-Forwarding rule within Exchange

But from what I can tell, none have any rules to set up scheduled times to forward, it's either all or nothing.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

If your Exchange server has OWA enabled, BIS seems to do a pretty good job of picking up mail; I know Desktop Manager has an option to not deliver when tethered but that might only be for the BES/Redirector?

Cheers.

Thanks. But as far as I have seen, BIS doesn't have an option to only forward to the device at certain times. Or am I missing something?

Nope. You either push email or you don't. If want forwarding at specific times you'd have to set that up on the side you're forwarding from. Please refer to the countless other threads on this matter. You can manually toggle email delivery and that's about it but not worth the hassle IMO.

It's rare that I suggest this but you should probably look into a pull email device since that's one of your requirements. Either that or just deal with the daytime email.

Have you looked into Blackberry Professional Software or Hosted BES?

Yeah, it's one of those things where it would be nice, but not essential. Mainly just trips and when I'm gone out of the office during normal working hours.

I'm thinking the best thing may be to just install the Redirector and launch it as necessary.

Yes, it does. When you no longer want it, just login to the BIS site and uncheck "Forward to Handheld". When you are ready to resume, login and select it. Please note that you will not receive any email on the handheld that was received during the period that "Forward to handheld" was unchecked. It starts from the moment that you re-enable it.

Right, but I was looking for something a little more automated that you can schedule.

BES also means $15 more per month for my data plan. I can't really justify the monthly expense or getting the IT guys to install it (with the free license) on our Exchange server just for this. So I guess the Redirector may be my best solution for the time being.

Thanks to everyone for the suggestions and input.

Use profile scheduler to set up a schedule where you only get notification of email in the time-period when you want it, and just let the email get forwarded to your BB all the time.

You'll only get notified when you want, and no hassle with trying to figure out how to manage push or forwarding to certain hours...

Well after seeing the buggy results of Redirector, I'm back to considering BES. Can you set the BES user account to only deliver during pre-set hours?
