What will happen if I install the 4.2 version in 4.1 OS? -
05-19-2008, 02:20 PM
What is supposed to happen if I install the 4.2 version in 4.1 OS? In my haste and excitement, I installed the 4.2 version on my 7100i with v4.1+OS.
I leaped into the install before reading all the instructions. D'OH !
During the install, the whole thing locked up but seems to be ok after a dirty reboot/ battery removal etc... I do not, however have the icons visible on my homescreen or the applications working on the 7100i.
Im not sure what to do now... If anyone could please tell me what my next move should be I would sure appreciate it.
Cheers!

tatthis, wait a sec, you might be able to simply remove the application you installed at Options > Advanced > Applications. Find the application you installed mistakenly, and click to delete. Try a battery pull to reboot the 7100.

VERY VERY excellent work you guys! Going to add these next month when the BOLD gets to Canadian shores or if work provides me a BB soon enough.
* works great on the 4.2.2 Simulators (8820 & 8320) on WinXP SP2. Hey I'm freebasing for my BB Fix alright?! Anyhow, this is great work!.
Thanks to Simon Hain and JSanders, and also to Guest for the PM notification.
This'll definately help navigation bigtime!
Looking for that perfect signature, hmm.

You got lucky. 4.2 apps will brick a 4.1 device, sure as heck. I had to reload the OS twice to my old 7290 while I was testing these.

Well yessir, I'm sure as heck lucky ! Thanks again for your help ! I'll ruin this thing yet ! I've had it for a couple of years so its about time I do something REALLY heinous to it.. It's pretty sturdy though as its survived a swim in the toilet, a night in the freezer, several rainstorms on the bike and (drumroll please.... wait for it.....) a 70mph drop from my Harley onto the freeway !

I have been complaining to RIM that the simulators are not 100% effective (which they, of course, deny). I have developed a few apps for my company and have seen behaviors on the handsets that the simulators do not duplicate. I have not downloaded the new apps yet, but your efforts are appreciated. 73

Can someone please tell me what these applications actually do? (I haven't tried them.) They seem to be just a quick way to get to particular websites. Is that all? I can get to these same websites the usual way?
Why would you want to visit them so much via your Blackberry? I normally use my PC - it's many times faster on the big screen.

pshute, yes, they are just that, shortcut icons that install your BB homescreen, loading this site and its mobile site. Why? Because sometimes a person is not in front of their PC.

Fair enough, that's why Blackberries were invented, I guess. What I'd like is a general application that could create a shortcut icon for any URL I like.
I wonder if it's possible. It could obviously be done for one URL, but I wonder if it's possible for a single program to use several icons if I wanted more than one. You've created one program per shortcut for yours, so I guess not.

Any docs around creating apps like this? I'd like to get more involved in making the blackberrys even more valuable at my company.

Download the ALX/COD files to your PC. Note where/which folder they download to.
Make sure your handheld OS is installed to your PC.
Open Desktop Manager > Application Loader. Click ADD, and navigate to the ALX file.
