Default Cingular blackberry on an AT&T account

I attempted to do a search on this question but didn't come up with anything...

I'm on the old AT&T GSM plan and I want to purchase a blackberry 7290. Is the 7290 unlocked for both AT&T and Cingular or only Cingular? I called Cingular customer care and they told me that Cingular uses a 64 bit SIM chip and AT&T used a 32bit chip so the new bb's won't work with the older chip. Is this true or are they just trying to get me to change my plan over to Cingular?

From my understanding, Unlocked is Unlocked. You should be able to use it on any provider. NOW, about the 64 Bit & 32 bit, I have no information on that. I have never heard of that at all. Sorry I wcould not be more help.

I guess what I meant to say was: is the 7290 locked for just Cingular or will AT&T chips work on it too?

Cingular BlackBerrys will work with AT&T or Cingular SIM cards (I have a Cingular 7290 with an AT&T Blue SIM card in it). But they are not unlocked.

I have an AT&T blue SIM. I picked up a Cingular 7290 on EBay that was claimed to be unlocked. I have my blue SIM in it without problem, and I also tried it in a SIM swap with a friend with TMO. My phone came up fine, sans blackberry data (he has a standard phone), while his came up with an error, indicated it was subsidy locked.

When is unlocked not unlocked? When it is a Cingular BB... Cingular rarely, if ever, unlocks their BBs. Very early model 7290s were unlocked, but most of them are locked - they will work with only Cingular or AT&T SIMs. I guess someone figured that they were then "unlocked". They aren't.

Is your blackberry unlocked? Because as a sales rep, I have never been able to put a customers at&t sim in a cingular bb or phone for that matter. It displays a sim restricted message.

However, It could be possible for it to work.
