Angry Verizon Data Plan REQUIRED on BB's????

Please Login to Remove!

So a friend of mine just got an 8130 off of Craigslist. Calls to switch over ESN numbers and the customer service rep said he is REQUIRED to have a BB Data Plan. They also said that they have a contract with RIM that forces them to do so, which is kind of weird considering I have a Pearl on Sprint and a Curve on T-Mo without data plans. Hmmmm.. Thoughts?

This is correct.
Verizon Wireless will automatically add the BlackBerry data plan based on the device ESN.
You can't have an active BB on their network without one.

Why would you want a blackberry without a data plan anyway?

I understand the staple of a BB is Data and E-Mail but requiring your customers to buy services your not going to use.. Wow.. The Big V and they're relentless grip over they're customers.

Thanks for the quick reply by the way!

He doesn't use data and e-mail. My GF uses the Curve and she likes the full keyboard, but same with my friend, doesn't need or use data or email (mainly text messages). I couldn't get a day without data or e-mail. I would go insane!

If you aren't going to use the features of a BB that use the data plan then I would suggest buying a cell phone. Seriously. There are several with full QWERTY keyboards for texting and some of those are even flip phones.

Seriously?
What if the user likes the BlackBerry device, and has no need for data features.
I recommend BlackBerry devices to many people who only use them for phone and SMS. There's nothing wrong with it. In fact, it gives them an easy upgrade path if/when they "outgrow" their current usability style and want to explore the other features that BlackBerry offers.

Everyone has different likes/dislikes/needs/wants.
There's nothing wrong with getting the device you want, and using it the way you want.

Verizon Wireless simply doesn't allow this type of flexibility for the user.

TO OP You are correct but there also isnt any use in bashing a carrier that chooses to follow the rules laid out by a manufactuer

Its a deal with RIM and verizon. From what I understand there are other carriers that are supposed to do the same thing but choose not to.

Like has been stated buy a regular cell phone if you dont need all the other stuff. The BB was designed as a email device it just happens to have other features.

Yes, seriously, I would suggest (as my initial post stated, a suggestion) that someone that doesn't need the features of a BB that use data buy something else.

It is a waste of money to buy a BB for SMS and phone use only IMHO. I have recommended to several people that they NOT buy BlackBerry devices because of their needs and wants.

You do what you want, you recommend what you want to whomever you want. Anyone is free to buy any device that they like and use it in any way that they like.

Again I will suggest that if you don't want the features of a BB that use data then you should buy something else. Seriously.

I couldn't have said it better. That's exactly what I did. I started with a Pearl with no BB Plan. Then gradually it became a necessity. Have you seen how many BBs are around these days on younger generations. I highly doubt ALL of them are using data features.

Also research should be done before buying something off of ebay or craigslist for this reason. The carrier should be contacted so they know what to expect when activating a new phone.

If its a rule and none of the other carriers don't follow it, why doesn't RIM do something about it ... must not be a real issue for them.

One of the reasons I left Verizon was their lack of flexibility; everyone else allows people do to this, and assuming all the carriers are under a similiar contract, why doesn't VZW allow this?

All that said, my wife wants a BB (so she can sync her contacts / calendar / tasks) with outlook. Pretty sure you don't need a data plan to do that; but she can't do it with VZW ... so she'll be moving to TMo or at&t soon enough.

I agree completely. I just had a friend address me with this question and wasn't sure the rules that Verizon had. I know the other 3 don't REQUIRE a BB Data Plan because I know people that use them that way.

Thats what was stated by someone who works for RIM on this very forum. I will see if I can find the thread. Its been quite a while ago so not sure if its even still here.

I was told the exact same thing from Nextel that its required and they put it on my account after 60 days of using it with out.

I really dont know why they choose to follow their agreement. I dont know why RIM chooses not to enforce it, why arent they craking down on all the pirated software running around. Why didnt they throw Kevin In jail for having a stolen device. Only RIM can answer those questions. I merely stated the facts as I know them.

Maybe if I started smoking crack it would make sense to me. Its this kind of crap that RIM does, being inconsistent, that drives me insane.

...and it seems like a waste of money to buy a BB and not use it with BES as you're really not making the most of the BB's full potential. Still, I try to assess each individual rather than make some sort of blanket claim like the one above. I know plenty of very happy BB owners that do not have a BB data plan.

You might as well tilt against the windmill of soccer moms driving SUV's that will never see unpaved road...
