I was told that sending msgs through Mobile IM that has MSN,AIM,and yahoo messanger on it that i would not be charged for txt msgs and that it uses the data to send the messages. Is this true or do i need to get a txt msg plan too

Now, that would also concern me...I am POSITIVE that IM's do not count as texts...but it wouldn't reflect on your statement either...I'm concerned as you are that the automated system is saying you have msgs. Private Msg me your number and I can check your account for you.

depends which app you use how messages get counted, verizon mobile IM uses sms, while if you get an app like webmessenger/jivetalk or im+ use data.

The ones the OP asked about do not count as texts...
