Most of my friends don't have a BB, so what would be a good (free) IM that I can get to communicate with them besides texting? I'm new to IM.

How do you want to IM with them? from your BB to an IM client on their PC?

I wanted to use my BB to IM their cellphone (some of them have a PDA) so I'm assuming they can get the same IM app that I get.

I'd recommend Jivetalk as well but it's not free.

Another recommendation for Jivetalk. It has a free 30 day trial. Test is out and see how you like it. It is worth every penny IMO.

As I stated I was new to IM, so I may not know the language you expect me to speak on this, but thank you anyway.

make sure you register with your spambox.

it's worth the $15 for a Jivetalk device license. it's by far the best IM client available for any handheld device... i wish they made it for my laptop. it has a very clean and simple interface with just enough options to get you on the ground and running. plus you can customize every alert available on the program to suit whatever environment you may be in. it's very compact and runs in the background with very few resources.

i've tried all the free ones on previous phones... bing! is the only one that even comes close, but its interface is not nearly as smooth as Jivetalk.

With Jivetalk can you IM other clients (i.e. yahoo, google talk, etc...), or only those with Jivetalk Client.

you can purchase and/or download a trial here: Beejive : instant messaging, just about anywhere

disclaimer: i am in no way connected to beejive/jivetalk beyond being a customer. i just REALLY like the client.

Check the link hdawg supplied. JiveTalk allows you to communicate with multiple IM clients such as AIM, Yahoo, MSN, Google Talk, Jabber, MySpace IM, Etc. It really is an excellent program.

excellent! misery loves company! muahahaha!!

just kidding. it's seriously good. i use it all day, every day... it stays logged in in the background on my phone whenever my phone is on, and i never shut off my phone. it's my primary form of communication between me and my friends as we're all microsofties, especially since i moved off campus and now telecommute from Las Vegas. all of my friends have WinMo smartphones and are jealous of how intuitive and easy to use Jivetalk is on my blackberry.

but since they work on campus, they wouldnt be caught dead with a blackberry at work.
