Default Gmail App + curve - not picking up mail

Please Login to Remove!

Hi All,

I just had my new blackberry delivered through work and i must say i'm a bit lost.

Its the 8320 curve on Orange UK.

I downloaded the google mail application for personal AND domain (business email). Red/blue icons.

Both are setup and logged into the mailboxes however neither check for mail in the background and notify me. Even if i open both programs it doesnt have any new mail in i have to refresh.

In the settings i have... "always keep me signed in, preload messages and notify me (edit blackberry profile)" all ticked. But nothing - all afternoon it hasn't beeped at me or even updated its own inbox with messages i've read on my PC.

A bit of a let down as i was expected to be in touch with my email all the time for work. This is my first BB so maybe i have missed something. WIFI is working fine, GPRS also works fine when out of WIFI range so connectivity is there.

Any one have any ideas?

Cheers,

ok i just figured that on GPRS the google app DOES pick up email and notifies me with beeps and LED flashing ETC.

But i only figured that out when i was out of the office that has a wireless cloud. At home i have wireless too and it stopped notifying me again.

So.... It appears that when i am connected to WIFI it does not auto check my email in the background and therefore doesn't notify me.

Has anyone found this or know how to fix?

Cheers!

Why don't you use standard BIS services to deliver emails to blackberry? These should work through WiFi.

I tried BIS but it was sending me hundreds of emails - the ones i receive that get filtered in gmail.

Also BIS wasn't syncing with my google inbox - i.e. not showing mail as read etc which is a real pain.

And your right - BIS did work fine over WIFI.

Gmail app works really well it seems - just wish i could get it working automatically to pick up emails over WIFI.

BIS doesn't provide HTML email (yet), it doesn't provide access to labels, it doesn't offer threaded conversation view and it doesn't provide access to contacts.

My Google Apps account has the same contacts as my BB address book, but my personal contact list is not sync'd to my BB. The Gmail app provides the access that I want and keeps my address books separate.

I am not the OP obviously, but the BB leaves a LOT out when it comes to Gmail features.

My Pearl doesn't have wi-fi, but my daughter uses the Gmail app on her Palm via wi-fi.
