no it does not add back the themes via app loader!
I got stuck and am forced to do a re install of os.

For now I'll try to answer some questions regrading the MaxMem app.

MaxMem will always ask first for every cod that will be deleted so if you are not sure about it you can click 'no' and go to the next cod. This also applys to Delete Themes. When you click Remove Themes, it will ask you if you have back up the BB and the disclaimer thing, you can say yes to both. Next, MaxMem will ask you one by one the theme cod that you want to delete. So just press 'no' for the theme that you want to keep.

To restore all the cod files that have been deleted, you don't have to reinstall OS. you can just connect it to Desktop Manager and run the application loader.

Thanks.

no it does not - I connected thru DM and nothing gets re-installed!

I did the following:

2. Ran MaxMem and removed VAD, MDS (I'm not on a BES), Media, and 2 of the default Themes (I actualy use the Today theme occasionally).
3. Did a battery pull/reset.
4. Restored the backup I initially made.
5. Did a battery pull/reset.

Everything that was removed by MaxMem DID NOT return with the restore. Maybe I did something wrong with the backup/restore, but not that I can see.

It's really no big deal to me, I didn't use any of the stuff that got removed. Just a heads up to those that are messing around that may delete something they actually need.
yes confirmed! I tried to wipe and restore because I needed to get back the today theme but no luck - it seems that MaxMem Permenantly does the removals !

backups dont matter - I did that and tried to restore after a wipe and it didnt restore to factory state - the MaxMem removal was permanent!

The regular backup does NOT backup any applications or modules that MaxMem removes. That's all done with application loader. it's the same as if you manually delete an application from your device. A restore doesn't bring that back. However, if you have the OS installed to your PC and you run application loader, the .cod's will come back.

I believe I may be starting to grasp this. So from what you are saying, if you haven't used DM App Loader to load an OS then what berrycoder claims that the App Loader will restore what was removed (themes, cods etc.) is impossible. For instance in my own case with a new Pearl since a have yet to load a new OS everything deleted by MaxMem cannot be restored by App Loader as the OS is not there due to it's not being loaded by the App Loader.

Thanks it is all clear to me now. Seems to have nothing much to do with a data backup at all. And the data backup is only to restore settings and data like address book and bookmarks and such in the event you lose those and the backup has nothing to do at all with restoring the items removed by MaxMem as only the App Loader can do that and only then when the App Loader was used to load your OS. If I am incorrect on any of this someone please let Me know.

Question: can I just copy my OS as it is from my phone in it's modified current form to a file and have that to use with App Loader? This would be much easier than starting from scratch. In other words can I sort of back up my current OS which is on the phone now?

I went here: (the ten post limit for links is counter productive)

BlackBerry - BlackBerry Desktop and Device Software Download Sites

and downloaded the OS for my Curve.

Just because you can, doesn't mean you should.

john, so to prevent this again, instead of doing a regular backup thru DM, would I open "advanced" and copy all the files from the device (on right) to box on the left and save to file?

Thanks

You cannot backup the .cod's that you are removing with this application. The reason the developer suggests a backup is so that you don't lose any of your personal data from the device should you have to reload the OS.

erichall1 above has it figured out. You are deleting OS files and those can't be backed up. They can be reloaded using DM and the OS installed on the PC but not backed up.

If you remove preinstalled wallpapers (which I recommend as they take a ton of space) then no, those go away too.

Just curious, but I have gotten rid of every possibly preloaded image on my Pearl and haven't missed any of it. I am wondering what possible use a New Folder Icon could be good for? I mean you can always make new folders anywhere you want be it homescreen, bookmarks, Pics whatever. So what's the use of an icon to for creating a new folder other than clutter? I just created a new Folder on my homescreen just to make sure it still works. Yep it works, simply pressed menu key and made new folder. Don't get what your issue could possibly be.

There are different icons for folders. Those are included with the preloaded wallpapers .cod.

I guess I sort of see it now as the name of the new folders on the homescreen only appear at the bottom of the screen when scrolled over.

It's all right. I probably would have gotten a better result if I had not ran the old fashion Mem Opt this morning.
The only thing I can see is it's probably faster to do. But from what I've read in this forum, I think I'll stick to the old ways. I have more control that way.

Peace,

Kamau

A question and a comment:

First, does removing the preinstalled media include removing the built-in ringtones? I can try it and find out, but I'd prefer to keep them without having to reload the OS.

Second, I removed VAD, MDS, and some themes (not the fallback or T-Mobile Zen) and I've noticed that I now never make it to EDGE or UMA - just to edge and uma. Data connectivity still seems to be working though - display issue?

EDIT: I got back to uppercase connections later in the evening, so I'm not sure what happened earlier, possibly network issues.

Once we maximized everything we are going to remove, I assume we can remove the app because that takes up memory too.

First

No it does not delete the tones....

Second

VAD is Voice Activated Dialing and MDS is ONLY used on BES... Should not effect anything if you are on BIS....

It takes up so little room so I wouldn't even bother. Plus, if you have to run App Loader, it may put everything back and you'll have to run it again. I deleted everything except VAD because I use it with my Bluetooth headset while Driving.

.jad files are for OTA installs. You could copy the file to your media card. Once the file is on your media card, go to your media app, press the menu key and select explore. Locate the file and select it. You should be prompted to download the file.
