Default Charging to Receive Text Messages?

Please Login to Remove!

I've just heard that Telus and Bell Mobility Canada are planning to charge $0.15 to RECEIVE text messages. Does anyone have any more information on htis? Will BB's be affected?

MODS: Could we have a forum where we discuss service providers, rate plans, etc.?

Alox, thanks for the suggestion... this General forum is perfect for this discussion.

IF those carriers increase their SMS rate, BBs would be affected just the same.

I'd be surprised if they weren't already charging for inbound SMS messages. If you don't have a text messaging plan, you are generally charged per message; inbound & outbound. If you have a text plan, this shouldn't be a concern.

What about those junk/spam sms messages that we occasionally get? Will I have to pay for those too?

You will have to pay for anything that you receive UNLESS you have a sms plan

You certainly will, yes. I believe your carrier can block certain numbers from reaching you if you request it. But you don't have that capability to selectively block SMS on your device. You can however, stop ALL SMS messages via a firewall setting on your Berry.

In the US.

Not all forum members are in the US. In fact, many are in the EU and aren't charged for inbound SMS or calls.

BB users should remember that you can send email to phones for no charge. You just need to get the carrier's email nomenclature (eg. tendigit#@txt.att.net). Also, some carriers have a different email nomenclature to send MMS. I don't want to pay more for unlimited text, so I usually email friends instead of text.
