How do i get it into test mode to check RF?

Press Alt + CAP + H together to enter the Help screen, then Z, A, M, L
individually in that order to enter the trace mode menu. Channel, color
code, and signal measurements are under the Operation Status menu.

what can this be used for ?

It is used by technicians and engineers to see the channel number in Hex, color code, signal quality and signal strength. I work for a communications company and we use this to see what cell site the phone is locked on to. It is pretty much useless unless you know the frequency plan of the carrier you use.
