Default Missing Preloaded Wallpapers in the Latest 4.5.0.xx release? Get them here!! - 07-18-2008, 03:28 AM

The latest version of 4.5.0.52 has been released recently but RIM left out the preloaded wallpapers. I realize that many people, including myself, usually go out of their way to remove these but lots of folks actually like them. So, if you're one of those people who just has to have the preloaded wallpapers OR the custom folder icons, here they are. They are simple alx/cod type installation file and Desktop Manager is required to load them.

Simply unzip the files into a folder somewhere you won't delete them. Then use the "Add" or "Browse" feature in Application Loader and browse to the .alx file. It should add the medialoader.cod to the application loader. Click on Finish to load the files to the BB. After the file has been installed, disconnect from the PC and remove the battery from the device to reboot.

What a dilemma RIM has created. I don't want the wallpaper but it would be nice to have the custom folders. A separation is in order. Can it be done?

Bump. I'd make this a sticky but there are already lots of stikys in this forum so hopefully everyone finds this thread if they want the wallpapers.

I was glad they got left out...but I still am only getting about 36 free MB w/ this version after a clean out...compared to the 42MB I was getting w/ 4.2.

I hadn't noticed that they were missing. Obviously I don't need them. Thanks for the links though.

Nice. That way I can upload a picture or 2 and not the whole wasteful package of pictures. That or load my SD drive with it. Thanks.

Hmm darn it's just ALX and COD file. I wonder if pictures are extractable?

JC, I am getting the following message on my BB Desktop Manager in the Application Loader when I am following your instructions above: "No additional applications designed for your device were found." I am using BB Desktop Manager 4.6, I've already installed the OS 4.5.0.52 on my 8320. I am running Windows XP media and I am unzipping the *.alx and the *.cod files into one same folder, I then browse with the application loader to the *.alx file and run, at which point I get the message above. What am I doing wrong? (I also noted in the *.alx file it says the version is 4.5.0.48 -- I have played with changing it to 4.5.0.52 but that gave the same result as before)
Thanks in advance.

Never mind. I solved the problem, whatever was causing it, by another method: I inserted this line into the blackberry.alx file:

<fileset radio="~CDMA-GPRS" Theme="Normal" Colour="True" series="8800|8300" Java="1.0">
<files>
net_rim_bb_medialoader_320x240_b.cod
</files>
</fileset>

between these lines:

<fileset Java="1.0">
<files>
net_rim_bb_preloaded_media_crawler.cod
</files>
</fileset>
<fileset radio="~CDMA-GPRS" Theme="Normal" Colour="True" series="8800|8300" Java="1.0">
<files>
net_rim_bb_medialoader_320x240_b.cod
</files>
</fileset>

<fileset Theme="Normal" Colour="True" series="8800|8300" Java="1.0">
<files>
net_rim_theme_bbdimension_icon_320x240_b.cod
</files>
</fileset>

and inserted the file net_rim_bb_medialoader_320x240_b.cod (provided by J.C.) into the "Java" folder.
Then ran the App Loader again.
All worked.

That is the method I used to add it to my OS. I just made up the zip files to make it easy for everyone. Not sure why you got the "no additional applications..." message, though.

I just downloaded it and tried it on mine and it worked fine.

We no longer publish each .alx file. You can edit the .alx yourself. See my optimizing your BB's memory post in my signature.

That's a strange move from RIM.
Anyone knows wether the removing was intentional or just an accident ?

I'm thinking about deploying OS 4.5 to whoever wants it in my company (100+ devices), but getting support calls for missing wallpapers sounds like a bad joke. :-/

Wirelessly posted (BB 11020)

I think it was intentional. The 8700 OS still has them. They've removed them due to memory issues would be my guess. I agree with you, though.

I actually only want one of the wallpapers and would happily trash the rest. Is there a way to just pull out the one?

So far, there seems to be no way to do so. :(

I really want to be able to do that.

I found a way to "extract" pictures. :D

Here's the attachment, it's 1 MB, so total is actually smaller than 1.5 mb for cod file. That's assuming you plan to upload all pictures into blackberry, which is unlikely. Average picture size is about 60 to 90 KB.

Last 2 is Lime and Spruce tiled style default wallpapers, I separated it out so I can upload majority in a zip file. Those 2 is (probably) least wanted ones...

Enjoy! :D

EDIT: See below for fixed default wallpapers.

The only way I've found to do this is to load the wallpapers then view each picture on the screen and take a screenshot and save it. Is that what you did?

Yeah that was what I did, and those is indeed 4.2.2.192 wallpapers.

Hmm maybe I can post it as new thread so it can be pinned, so people can use those? Or move it into your memory saving space tips thread? Up to you John.

In my memory thread I posted that the single wallpaper .cod file can be broken down into smaller .cod's if you just change the name to a .zip file. I haven't yet tried to load the individual .cod's, though. Some have to be folders and some have to be pictures.

I didn't use JL_Cmder. I used BBScreenShooter.

Hmm a new idea.. how about a new pinned thread with all default wallpapers downloadable for different models?

Oops!! I accidentally added a one pixel border to all default pictures. For now, use 1:1 zoom, then set as wallpaper. I will post updated ones without borders soon.

Oh and thanks for pin.

EDIT:

Okay, here's the corrected wallpapers! The borders is removed, which made zip small enough to be uploaded as is.

Yeah like RIM documents what have been changed...

That's one bad thing about RIM.

Actually, RIM does document it. They provide it to the carriers but the carriers very rarely provide it to us.

Default Do not see folder icons or wallpaper - 09-04-2008, 11:55 AM

Okay I have tried loading the wallpaper/icon media file about three different ways (including most recently the method above) and I do see it in my Applications list. I still do not see any wallpaper or when I create/modify a folder anything other than the basic yellow folder icon. I only want to be able to change the folder icons on my BB any suggestions or something obvious that I am missing.

Thanks.
