Default DM4.5 Backup Fails at Profiles

Please Login to Remove!

Hi,
I'm having a problem backing up a 8820 OS 4.2.2 using Desktop Manager 4.5. It gets up to Profiles and fails. Any idea how I can identify the profile that is causing the problem and fix it? Thanks.

Regards-Michael G.

I don't know how to narrow it down to one profile. You've got a corruption in there somehow. I would use the backup/restore Advanced feature to clear the profiles database on the device (right side panel in the backup/restore Advanced screen.

I have run into this corrupted Profiles issue on backup before, and it's not inherent to OS 4.2.2.xxx nor DM 4.5 (I ran into this twice with OS 4.2.1.xxx and DM 4.2 and 4.3).

As John says, delete your current profiles, and do an advanced/selective restore from backup.

HOWEVER, a tip here. If your profiles use ringtones from internal phone memory, fine; but if you use ringtones from your SD card (media storage card), then before you start the restore, TURN OFF MASS STORAGE MODE first. After the restore, you can turn on mass storage mode again.

Why, you ask? It seems that when you restore the Profiles database, some sort of verification takes place, where if the profile line is linked to a ringtone on the SD card, the phone will not be able to find it and that profile's section line (for lack of a better term) will use a default ringtone (similar to the ringtone/sound when you first get a new BB before you have edited your profiles). When the BB is hooked up to the PC and is in mass storage mode, the BB cannot access the files on the SD card until it is disconnected.

If, like me, you use all custom profile ringtones that are on the SD card, after the restore you would find that all the Profiles look like they are default, in effect, you lose all your customization -- unless you disable mass storage mode first.

I do not understand this solution. First, how do I delete my current profiles?
Second, if I do an Advanced/Seclective Restore from backup, am I supposed to restore the Profiles only? If so, how would that fix anything?

I am have been having this problem forever (on and 8300, 8310 and now it is infecting my new Bold. Backups always fail on Profiles.

I believe the issue is related to having custom ringtones and wallpapers stored on and SD card that the BB uses. But even when I change that I get the error.

Is there any solution to this problem. While there is a workaround (Advanced Backup and De-Select Profiles), that is really annoying.

Thanks.
