Question How Is The Blackberry?

Please Login to Remove!

I'm currently an AT&T subscriber using the Moto Q9h. It's a good phone, but I'm in the market for something more powerful--and I'm keeping my eye out for the release of the BB 9000 ("Bold") sometime this month (hopefully?)

Anyhow, before I jump in and buy a Blackberry, I had some general questions--in order of importance to me:

1. How well does the BB Desktop Manager work with Windows XP, as well as Outlook? I heavily use Outlook's Calendar, To-Do Tasks, and Contacts features. Do they all sync flawlessly with the BB phone, or are there problems? Do they transfer all fields of information, or are some fields dropped?

2. Can the BB phone browser handle websites that have Flash content? How about website security? Does it support SSL for business transactions?

3. How is text and MMS messaging on the BB? Is it threaded, or is it in the style of Windows Mobile 6 (with "Inbox" & "Sent Items")?

4. Generally, how is the multimedia quality (sound, camera, etc.) on the BB?

Thanks for any information!

Well to start its the industry standard for mobile devices....The whole idea, is you attach it to your companies BES and basically get all the features of xxx8220;outlookxxx8221; on your mobile device. This is bbxxx8217;s bread and butter.

Thanks...I understand that the BB is great when an enterprise system is set up; however, I work in education, and there isn't much of a framework for that where I'm at...I'll be relying on a sync with the Outlook that stands alone on my desktop. Is it a relatively easy sync with a desktop computer, and will all my information transfer easily?

I just switched from a Dash to a Curve, and I've found both good and bad things compared with the windows mobile OS, but more good than bad. The BB desktop manager is, IMO, easier to use than the ActiveSync in windows. I like that my curve has a standard headphone jack, and I think the OS is more responsive and user friendly than windows. I'm not too sure about Flash, haven't really tried it, but the messaging is better, and you can see both sent and received together on 1 screen. I can't stream media on it, and cant' use my Slingbox any more or listen to Sirius radio online. So far those are the only things I miss from Windows6

Contacts, calendar, task and memos sync relatively easy using Desktop Manager connected tot he BB via USB. You do need to set every thing up properly, but that is pretty easy. Emails does not sync, but gets pushed directly to the BB using BIS (Blackberry Internet Service). Your carrier has a BB site which you log into, enter your BB PIN and IMEI and then enter the email account info. Also chance your Outlook settings on your desktop to "Leave Mail on Server". Mail should begin to arrive in 15-20 mins if all is set correctly and then about every 15 mins thereafter, sometime quicker.

All syncs wirelessly if one is on BES, but you said you will not have that option.

I suggest you also take a read of the FAQ.

Wirelessly posted (8100 Pearl)

I don't believe flash will work on BB at least without the assistance of some sort of addon. I haven't found one to date however.

Flash doesn't work on any BlackBerry. But the browser does support SSL.

Nope. There are quite a few threads complaining about the lack of threaded SMS/MMS. Definitely scan the existing threads on your questions if you have a chance.
