Can you receive emails while you're on the phone, simultaneously
 

asks our CFO. I guess he was on the phone for a while and wanted to check his emails. I could see his queued messages on the server but it was waiting for his handheld to be available. Is there a setting anywhere?

I think it depends on your carrier technology. GSM/GPRS you can use voice and data at the same time. CDMA/1X I don't think so, but someone pls correct me if I'm wrong on this.

I am not aware of any cellular technology supporting this, and know for a fact that CDMA does not.

I thought GPRS paused your data connection when a call came through???

It's not so much that it pauses your data connection, but if there is a brief break in your data connection a voice call can, under certain conditions, come through. It's not 100% reliable.

CDMA-- including 1xRTT-- can do this too, but the data timeout is generally a lot longer (about 10 seconds on most networks).

Regardless, the OP was asking if it's possible to use both the voice and data networks simultaneously (ie, browse the web while talking on the phone). The only thing you should be able to do, on some networks, is send and receive SMS while on a call, unless your handset is set to send SMS via GPRS.

Simultaneous voice and data is not possible with any current air interface.

It is possible to send and receive text messages while a voice call is active. And that's it.

I believe that you CAN NOT send an e-mail message while on a phone call but I have sent a SMS message on a call and it worked.

I just tried it on my 7290 w/ Tmobile and it does not work. It puts my outgoing email on hold until the call is ended. But, the second the call is ended it sent out my email and received the email that I had sent to my BB.

What about if you're sending or receiving emails when a call comes in? Will the call immediately roll to voicemail?

my expirience is that the calls usually will sneak through while I am doing data transfers, but I have had them go directly to voicemail on occassion

ok some clear information.

1. SMS is sent via the paging channel so you can be on a voice call and still send, receive SMS

2. Data is carried over the same " timeslots " on TDMA and the same " code " on CDMA as the voice transmission, therefore it is not possible to have a data and voice session live at the same time.

3. Most networks air interface are set to prioritise the voice traffic so if you are on a data session ie sending email, the mobile network will page the BB to notify of the waiting phone call ( via the same paging channel used by the SMS ). when the BB responds to the waiting call the GPRS session is suspended and the voice call connected.

When the voice call clears down the GPRS is re started where it left off.
