Exclamation Complete Newbie with a few questions

Please Login to Remove!

I currently have a Samsung SCH-U740 cell from Verzion and my contract is almost up .. I was thinking about getting the 8330 Curve (dont want a touchscreen phone) .. Please dont flame, Im completely new to the BB scene, and I am a tech geek

1) Does anyone use this phone without a data plan?

2) Is it worth it to get a BB without the data plan? (45 bucks is kinda high considering it cost more than my 5mb connection I have with cable)

3) Can you use Yahoo messenger with BB as I use Yahoo constantly?

4) Is there an option of unlimited txt messaging for the BB? (I have this on my current Samsung phone)

I really appreciate the help in making my possible purchase a sucess!

1. Yes. It limits the functionality, but it can be done.
2. That's your call. You can't use any data services, so it does limit the functionality of the device without a data plan.
3. Yes, there is a client for the Blackberry. I don't use Yahoo messenger, so I don't know whether it uses data or SMS for the messages. if it uses SMS, then no problem... if it uses BB data, then you would need a data plan to make it work.
4. I would expect VZW to have an unlimited text plan... I'm on AT&T and we do.

Actually, I believe with Verizon you cannot get a BlackBerry without a data plan. You can get the BlackBerry data play for $29.99, you don't have to get the $45 plan.
You can use Yahoo Messenger on BlackBerry. Looking at the Yahoo Mobile website, it looks like it uses sms. Verizon has several text plans -- check verizonwireless.com for the options.

daphne is correct. I sold VZW up until April this year. You have to have a data plan if you have a BB with vzw. Problem is that even if you don't have a data plan the phone is always searching for the BB network. So the way vzw is set up you get charged data usage and it go to be too much for vzw to go back every month and fix the billing issue. When you get your BB you still pick a normal vzw plan and then just add the data to it so yes you can still have unlimited text. The BB will also come with a messenger application that includes AIM, MSN and Yahoo all in one package.

My Curve is pretty new and it didn't come with that. Is that a new thing, or only certain models come with it?

Thats a great question...The icon is a small red box that says Mobile IM...However the curve wasn't released in the store I worked at until after I left so I never got to check it out. I am a pearl user so it may be a pearl thing.

My Curve didn't come with the red box. I think I've seen other Pearl users mention it, come to think of it.

Hehe... thanks but I already have JiveTalk. I had JiveTalk before I got the Curve and transfered the license. Otherwise, I'd check it out for sure.

1 - As others have said with verizon you must have a data plan.

2 - You can get unlimited web and email plan for $30.00 a month if you are not on BES.

3 - You can.

4 - If you current plan already has this it will still be active on the BB. I have unlimited on my plan.

Yup, 29.99 is unlimited for non-BES. One thing you can do is if you want email from work is to setup a forwarding rule in your work email to forward all incoming messages to your BIS email (xxx@vzw.blackberry.net).
