Unlocking the device simply allows you to use it on another network. For example, I have a T-Mobile Curve but I am under contract with AT&T, I can unlock the device to use it on AT&T's network.

Unlocking won't do anything for you, because you're using a Verizon device on a CDMA network. Your phone is pretty much locked forever for use on Verizon's network.

Unlocking is popular for GSM phones, because it will easily allow you to use any carrier's SIM card in the device.

Unlocking also improves the resale value of your phone.

It has no effect on media files or device features.

It also allows you to travel abroad and use those cheapo pre-paid sims inside your device without having to add international roaming/world traveler features onto your account.

Just keep in mind that when you acquire service with an unlocked phone that is not of the original phone purchase provider, the SP you're with most likely will turn you away when it comes to technical support as it is unlocked.

Nope. It's a subsidy lock. Not a media/features lock.

It should allow for the use of other carrier's SIM's while abroad though, IIRC.

It should be noted that Verizon prevents the GSM portion of their 8830 from working in the U.S. It's designed strictly for traveling abroad.
