does it cost anything to use the bb messenger and all the components included with it? Newbie here and I couldn't find what I wanted in the search function.

If you have an unlimited Blackberry data plan, then no, it doesn't cost extra.

I think I was charged for sending the voice messages on the bb messenger. Does that sound right?

That should be included, as well.

I don't think you should be charged for adding a voice note to a BB Messenger message, but Sprint may be different from AT&T. If you send an MMS with a voice note then yes, you'll be charged. Messages like MMS or SMS are not part of data.

Yes, an MMS would be different. If you use BBMessenger to send a voicenote, then it will use data and be included in the data plan, not the MMS/SMS plan.

The only option is what you can set in profiles:

How do I edit my notification tones (profiles)? - BlackBerryFAQ

There is nothing to keep it from notifying only when open.

I was hoping RIM would fix that in 4.5 but it doesn't seem they ever wanted to give a thought about it. It's one of those things that make you think everyone else is crazy.
