I believe the Attachment Server determines if the attachment is transcodable, and if not, does not tell the BES to provide that "Open Attachment" option for the associated message.

I would check out your Attachment Server to figure out what may wrong.

Are you using BES or Desktop Redirector? Opening attachments isn't available if you're just using Desktop Redirector. It is available if you use Web Client.

I use Desktop Redirector. If I receive an email with an attachment that I want to open, I forward it to my BWC account. When it shows up on my BB, I can open it.

If you're on BES I'd try to test the attachment through the attachment server tab in BlackBerry Server Configuration; select test attachment service in the configuration option, and then submit the file you're trying to open on the BlackBerry. should tell you if it was successful or not.

I had issues with .tif's but after applying a service pack and testing the attachment service it worked fine.
