!!IMPORTANT!! AIM and ICQ enabled on ALL CARRIERS!!! -
09-10-2008, 11:02 AM
Just received word that AIM and ICQ was enabled by RIM on ALL carriers yesterday. The account tags were enabled for everyone. I tested this and my AIM client is successfully connected and working, no issues. You can delete the OZ client now.
So everyone that's been trying to get this working can now be at ease. It's finally enabled by RIM. Give it a try

I'm working successfully on the AT&T network with client version 2.0.46. Make sure you have the right service books installed.

Working on Verizon - at least it was earlier. Seems both the RIM AIM and JiveTalk are having problems logging to AOL.

No love for me on AT&T either. How exactly do we make sure we have the right service books? Or, more to the point, how do we GET the right service books should we not currently have them?

2.0.46 AIM shows you as mobile when you log on, it does let you see your whole buddy list. I thought I saw 2.1 is out? Does that version show you as mobile also?

It is working on AT&T, see my pics above.
Here's the files needed for both versions.

I will let you know about version 2.1.32. I'm in the process of installing it and testing it right now. So far, I've only tested 2.0.46.

2.1.32 does include your whole buddy list, but not buddy icons. There's no way to change the mobile connection status in the options. From RIM's support site avatars should be displayed on the conversation and conference screens. Maybe in the next update....

I have the 8320 on tmo. I have been waiting for an upgrade of aim.
Yesterday, I checked to see if there was an upgrade and there was.
I upgraded from 1.1.15 to 2.1.32 and now I get a message "service not emabled for this handheld" wtf? I did a hard reset, re-sent service books, removed app and re-installed and nothing.
It also does not give me a way to downgrade. Looks like I'm stuck. I would have not downloaded this app if it was not released on mobile.blackberry.com.
Are there any solutions?

I just downloaded the files mshipek provided for aim and then the service books as well and got it working.
The way to install the service books is to do a restore and choose the servicebooks.ipd file mshipek provided. I backed up my phone before installing the service books incase i ran into a problem but all it does is update your service books and nothing else.
I also had to go and delete a few service books that were for mshipek such as email and some others i knew i did not need.
You should register with rim again on your phone just to be safe and then log in to the BIS and send your services books for email.

I was successful as well on my 8300 running 4.5.0.69
I did have to delete some of mshipek's service books, but all worked well. Here's the procedure I took:
- Ran Desktop Manager and chose Backup and Restore. Chose Advanced, and opened the IPD file supplied. Clicked the Service Books on the left side of the window, and click the right arrows to move it to my BB.
- Still in Desktop Manager, I went to Application Loader, Add/Remove Programs, and clicked the Browse button to find the ALX file for Instant Messenger. Ran through the install process.
- Opened the AIM file now on my BB and signed in.
- Went to Options - Advanced - Host Routing Table. Clicked the menu button and chose to register with the network.
- Went online to my BIS admin page and resent the service books.
- Opened Options - Advanced - Service Book and deleted all mshipek-specific service books. 2 of his email addresses were in there, so you're looking for 2 CICAL and 2 CMIME entries from him.
- Finally, went to Options - Advanced - Default Services and changed them back to the email and calendar I like having as the default.
So far, so good - it's been about an hour; I've had numerous AIM chats; no errors about missing service books or anything else. It's even survived a battery pull and keeps on ticking!

I didn't even realize those were there, duh. Sorry about that. I'm wondering if those service books are restored on someone elses blackberry, does it give them access to my email through BIS? Hmmm.
Anyway, I removed those BIS service books and reposted the .zip

Nope, it doesn't. Otherwise I would have contacted you directly before posting complete instructions
Thanks for deleting them, though - makes the install process that much easier.

Here ya go.
EDIT!! zip file replaced with edited icq.alx for BB OS 4.5. ICQ is already part of the OS package. The icq I had attached was a very old version.

Does anyone know how Verizon will be charging this? I thought they had said before that AOL IM's would be counted as text. Can anyone confirm this, or does RIM opening this up mean that it will count as Data?

Cool, I wanted to make sure before I got too happy and actually used something that RIM allowed on the device... Verizon being so accepting of allowing people full capabilities to use the BB's

There were no signs / warnings / cautions stating that it uses SMS so one would safely assume it uses data.
