Hi folks,
I've got a quick question about just how good and/or usefull google maps is.
I'm about to upgrade to the 8110 which has built in GPS, can I use the inbuilt GPS with google maps, and if I can, how good is it? Could it be used as a tomtom alternative?
Cheers
Skyman

The answer is it works..... but it's no TomTom or Garmin nuvi. THere are no voice turn by turn directions. It doesn't do the "Recalculating" if you get off track. It works in a pinch. But it's not a replacement for a dedicated GPS.

That said... The new Garmin for BlackBerry looks pretty good. But today, it's only available in the US.

Please do a search in the GPS forum. This has been discussed in depth.

I would say try amazegps.. it has turn by turn directions.. it may be slow to load and startup but once done it is pretty slick.

Garmin mobile works beautifully with turn by turn voice navigation, road hazards, as well as lookups in the general area (atm's, fuel, food etc).. I prefer Google Maps for searching for a location.. then using Garmin to navigate.

Check out the GPS section. It has a sticky at the top with reviews for many software apps.

Note that Garmin Nav is a buy once for one device...if you have to switch devices if your current one fails or is lost, you have to purchase it again...$99 a pop (as much as I paid for my 8130!)
