Default International capabilities question! If you travel, please help!

Hello!

I am new to the BlackBerry family. I am leaving for trip to Europe in a few weeks. I will be gone for 3-5 months and will be in the UK and France for the majority of my time (and coming back to the US occasionally during that time).

I have been told that only the 8830 will work for me overseas. I will need to call back to the US quite often and am looking for the easiest way to do that. All is fine with that except for the fact that I really want the Curve instead of the larger 8830.

Does anybody know if the Curve will work abroad, and if so, what the rates and coverage is like? I'm on Verizon and they keep telling me that only the 8830 will work. It's just quite big and I'm hoping I can get the Curve to work too. Any advice will be greatly appreciated as I am clueless about all of the network issues, etc.

Thanks!

As far as Iknow the 8830 is the only blackberry on verizon that will work overseas. You will need to get the internaltional SIM card and add international services to it for it to work. I'm pretty sure the curve does not have the SIM card capability.

The Verizon Curve model 8330 will not work outside of North America.

I roam in France with Orange and in the UK with Vodafone. Have people call you it's cheaper and use email and pin has much as you can instead of calling. For local calls get a pre paid sim with a cheap unlocked phone. They're easy to find there.

Yup. When in Europe I ditch the Blackberry (horrors, I know!) and use a simple GSM phone like the Moto RAZR2 V9. Email waits until I'm at my computer. Other solutions are too expensive or unreliable.

What's needed is a no-contract, short-term, pre-paid SIM card with a Blackberry Data Plan. Until we get those, there is no perfect solution.

I have not tried this, but it is supposed to offer close to what you are asking.

Low-cost Europe cell phones and European SIM cards

Also, to the OP, if you want to dump Verizon and go with AT&T or T-Mobile, you would be able to use their Curves abroad.
