Default Question regarding firmware/software downloads

Please Login to Remove!

Hi,

I'm a bit confused here (again)..

I have just upgraded to the Bold 9000, my previous phone was the Pearl 8120, I am wondering where to look for the latest firmware for the Bold, I had a look on the Blackberry site and saw downloads and saw the latest desktop software is version v4.6?

Do I click that, and then this version:
Desktop Manager 4.6.0 B15 English - With Media Manager?

Or is that simply an update for my desktop manager? I clicked 'about' on my desktop manager to see what version I have and it says this:

version 4.3.0.15 (Aug 15 2007).

Should I upgrade to v4.6?

I'm not sure if the desktop software download is a separate thing from a firmware download?

My provider is O2 in the UK, please can someone explain the above issues to me simply, and tell me how I can get the latest updates for both the Bold and my desktop manager?

Thank you.

Chris.

Default 2 different things

The firmware and the desktop software are two separate pieces of software.

The firmware is what runs your device and allows you to connect to the mobile network and utilize all your applications etc.

The desktop software is more of a platform for managing your device and all the applications contained within. Using the desktop software you will be able to add and remove applications, manage your various media on your device and perform backups and sync with your PC.

Unfortunately I do not know where to get the firmware for your O2 Bold =(

Perhaps someone else could chime in if they have a link to it.

Latest OS is always stickied in the model-specific forums. For your Bold, go here:
Latest OS : Bold 9000 4.6.0.268/4.6.0.147 (English + MultiLanguage)

Just be aware that the link might not go to a release for your carrier. It really doesn't matter in my experience but it you want to stick with OS releases from O2 then you'll need to go to O2's website and find their Blackberry download page. It might be linked via BlackberryFAQ.com.

For Desktop Manager you can always get the latest version from Blackberry.com. Whether or not an upgrade is "worth it" is your judgment call to make. I haven't seen significant changes that would make me feel that upgrading from 4.3 is worthwhile but YMMV.

FYI the firmware is generally referred to as the handheld software.
