Hello,
Is there any way of checking which programs are running in the background, and then turn them off when they are no longer being used?

You can check them, but five will always be running and can't be shut off.
From the main screen, press the Menu key and select "Switch Application". It will show you what's running.

Or if you press the MENU key at the same time as the BACK (right of trackball) key, you can select from amongst the running apps.

Actually that's ALT + ESC (back... right of trackball)

It is. He may have been thinking the soft reboot? Alt+Shift+Del?
